Tomlinson, Rivers questionable

Jan 14, 2008 - 9:54 PM SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- San Diego Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson and quarterback Philip Rivers are both listed as questionable for next Sunday's AFC championship game against the New England Patriots.

Tomlinson underwent an MRI exam on Monday that revealed a hyperextended left knee, but the league's Most Valuable Player in 2006 said he expects to play.

"I think they have me listed as questionable," Tomlinson said Monday. "I'm pretty sure I'll be able to play."

Chargers coach Norv Turner said Rivers suffered an MCL sprain of his right knee and is "day-to-day." Rivers is not expected to practice until late in the week.

"It's questionable if he will play but he's got a chance," Turner said.

Tomlinson suffered what was termed a bruised knee in Sunday's 28-24 victory over the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC divisional playoffs.

The injury occurred with just under 10 minutes to play in the first half, when Tomlinson was hit by Marlin Jackson at the end of an 8-yard run. He did not return.

Tomlinson said he does not know when he will be able to return to practice.

"I'm not sure yet," he said. "We'll get as much treatment as we can."

After Sunday's game, Tomlinson said he thought he could have went back into the game, but the knee stiffened up on him and the decision was made to keep him out.

Rivers was injured and forced out of the game on the final play of the third quarter.

On a seemingly harmless play, Rivers threw a 56-yard touchdown pass to Darren Sproles on the final play of the third quarter, but appeared to land awkwardly and limped off the field.

Backup Billy Volek replaced Rivers and led the go-ahead touchdown drive, capping it with a 1-yard sneak with 5:17 left to play.

Rivers insisted he was fine and said he could have gone back in if needed - but did not want to break Volek's rhythm.

"It's nothing with the left knee," Rivers said. "It was an injury from Tennessee and I'm not sure how it happened, but it's fine."
