Jets' Davis encouraged by meeting with owners

Oct 19, 2017 - 3:31 AM FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - New York Jets linebacker Demario Davis was one of 13 players who met with owners on Tuesday at league headquarters in Manhattan to discuss social issues.

Already a leader on the Jets who has served as a team captain, the 28-year-old was reportedly a strong voice in the room from the players' side.

"We have a tremendous platform in the NFL, and to whom much is given, much is required," Davis said after Wednesday's practice. "That's why we simply can't just play football."

Davis didn't take any questions, but said it was "encouraging to see the owners and the athletes wanting to push the country in the right direction. I think we're working together. The thing that I see is our owners and our players have a tremendous love and devotion for our country, and that's neat to see."

Davis also said that he thinks the league is "very near" the time when protests will end.

Jets veteran left tackle Kelvin Beachum was also present at the meeting.

The Jets reacquired Davis in a trade with the Browns this offseason. He currently leads the team with 53 tackles.
