49ers QB Beathard performed OK in first start
Oct 24, 2017 - 8:36 PM SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- C.J. Beathard's first NFL start wasn't a total disaster Sunday. The rookie third-round pick will go down in the San Francisco 49ers' record book as the passing-yardage leader in an NFL debut, having thrown for 235 yards in the loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
The previous 49ers record had been set by Tom Owen in 1974, when he accumulated 206 yards against the Oakland Raiders.
Owen had a rushing touchdown that season, the first ever by a 49ers rookie quarterback, and Scott Bull recorded one in 1976.
But it had been 41 years before the third -- which was recorded by Beathard on a 4-yard, fourth-quarter run Sunday that provided the 49ers' lone touchdown of the game.
Beathard had his fair share of issues in the 40-10 loss, including two fumbles, but 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was proud of how the first-time starter responded to the beating he took from the Cowboys.
"It's fun to watch tape with a guy who I know is soaking everything in," Shanahan said of Monday's day-after session. "Just talking with him through text (Sunday) night, I could tell he was watching it a ton (Sunday) night, having a bunch of questions even before we got in (Monday).
"It's always fun when you can get with a guy and you feel you have a chance to help him get better. I enjoy meeting with him because he asks good questions and I think he learns from every rep that he gets."
No one has shouted yet.
