Chiefs release DT Miller after domestic battery charge
Nov 16, 2017 - 6:14 PM The Kansas City Chiefs released defensive tackle Roy Miller on Monday, two days after he was arrested in Jacksonville, Fla., and charged with domestic battery of his wife."We did release Roy and we're going to move on from that," Chiefs coach Andy Reid told reporters Monday, declining to answer further questions about Miller being waived. "I can't really talk about anything from a legal standpoint, so I'm going to just leave it at that."
Miller, 30, is accused of dragging his wife by the hair, tearing a braid from her head and nearly ripping off her shirt, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office incident report.
According to report, the altercation between the 6-foot-1, 301-pound player and Nicole Miller began with an argument after the couple returned home separately.
Nicole Miller told police her husband grabbed her by the hair, pushed her around, threw her phone into the toilet and prevented her from retrieving it.
A witness told deputies their four children sought shelter in the other side of the home during the fight.
When police arrived at the couple's home, Roy Miller was inside sleeping. He agreed to speak with police outside before being arrested.
Miller was taken into custody on suspicion of domestic battery and booked into the Duval County Jail at 4:53 a.m. ET, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Miller was released on his own recognizance after an initial court appearance Saturday afternoon. Another hearing was set for Nov. 28.
With the AFC West-leading Chiefs (6-3) on a bye last week, Miller traveled to his home in Jacksonville.
Miller, playing in his ninth NFL season, appeared in seven games this season and made two tackles in the Chiefs' 28-17 loss to the Cowboys in Dallas on Nov. 5. He has six tackles on the season.
Miller played four seasons (2013-2016) with the Jacksonville Jaguars before being released on March 12. He signed with the Chiefs on Aug. 2.
To take Miller's spot on the roster, the Chiefs plan to sign veteran defensive tackle Cam Thomas, a league source told ESPN's Field Yates. Thomas was in training camp with the Chiefs this year before being released in early September.
The 6-4, 330-pound Thomas is in his eighth NFL season after being taken in the fifth round of the 2010 draft by the San Diego Chargers. He spent four seasons with the Chargers, two with the Pittsburgh Steelers and one with the Los Angeles Rams, recording 114 tackles and 7.5 sacks in 102 games.
The Chiefs travel to play the New York Giants on Sunday.
No one has shouted yet.
