Cardinals QB Gabbert to start versus Texans
Nov 17, 2017 - 8:46 PM Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said Friday that quarterback Blaine Gabbert will start over injured Drew Stanton for Sunday's game against the Houston Texans.Arians told reporters that Stanton, who has a sprained knee, will be Gabbert's backup if he can physically play.
Stanton has been the starter since Carson Palmer went down with a broken arm in Week 7. If Stanton can't go, Matt Barkley, who signed with the Cardinals earlier this week, will back up Gabbert.
This will be Gabbert's first start since Week 5 last season for the San Francisco 49ers -- a 33-21 loss against the Cardinals on Oct. 6, 2016. The 28-year-old Gabbert completed 56.9 percent of his passes for 925 yards, five touchdowns and six interceptions in six games last season.
"He can spin it as good as anybody I've ever had," Arians said earlier this week of Gabbert. "Don't overload him with things he has to think about for this week because they're such a good pressure team. Let him know his protections are sound. Keep him in his comfort zone because he can spin the ball. As long as we're getting open, we've got to catch it."
No one has shouted yet.
