Among the high-profile NFL betting matchups in Week 3 is a cross-conference showdown between the New Orleans Saints and New England Patriots in Foxborough. Both squads come into this contest with 1-1 records. Interestingly, many analysts viewed these two teams as trending in opposite directions coming into the year. The NFL betting odds agree with that assessment, for now, pegging the home squad as a field goal favorite.

Overview

As amazing as the Saints looked in their blowout Week 1 win, the exact opposite can be said for their Week 2 loss to the Carolina Panthers. Being without several members of the coaching staff due to a certain unnamed virus certainly didn’t help matters. That being said, it was a brutal performance, particularly on offense. After throwing five touchdown passes in his debut as Saints starter, QB Jameis Winston had none on Sunday. Instead, he threw two picks and only managed 111 yards.

It was a major struggle on the ground for New Orleans in Week 2 as well. In fact, Winston led all ball-carriers with 19 yards on three attempts. Alvin Kamara barely factored into the game plan, and no Saints receiver reached 30 yards on the day. The offense will need to be a lot better going up against the tough Patriots defense this week. It was also a poor showing defensively. After exceeding expectations in a big way to begin the year, the Saints allowed Sam Darnold and Christian McCaffrey to go off for the Panthers.

The NFL betting market moved in the Patriots’ favor ahead of their Week 2 divisional showdown at the New York Jets. New England rewarded bettors who stuck with them following their close Week 1 loss by dismantling the Jets on Sunday. The defense was the major story, intercepting Zach Wilson four different times. A ball-hawking secondary could prove to be a nightmare matchup for Jameis Winston this week.

Offensively, the Patriots stuck to their bread and butter in Week 2, which is running the football. Damien Harris led the way with 62 yards on 16 carries. He also had a touchdown on one of the nastiest runs we may see all season. James White had a rushing score and also led the team with 45 yards receiving. Rookie quarterback Mac Jones out-classes his counterpart in Wilson on the decision-making front. While he only had 186 yards through the air, Jones stayed turnover-free for the second straight game, helping New England cash as NFL betting favorites.

Trends

  • Saints are 1-1 ATS and 0-2 to the over this season.
  • Patriots are 1-1 ATS and 0-2 to the over this season.
  • Each of the Saints’ last five games has gone under the total.
  • The total has gone under in eight of the Patriots’ last ten games.
  • The Patriots are 13-3 SU in their last 16 games against NFC opponents.

Bottom Line

When it comes down to it, this matchup could very well be a game that confirms the fluky results both teams had in Week 1. The Saints took advantage of a Green Bay Packers squad that completely forgot to show up. Meanwhile, the Patriots dominated the box score against the Miami Dolphins, yet still lost the game. Turnovers proved to be the difference, right down to the fumble on what likely would’ve been the game-winning drive.

For now, bettors are wise to stand firm behind the preseason prediction that the Saints would regress while the Patriots would take a step forward in 2021. The total suggests a defensive affair on Sunday, but this should not sway anyone from laying the field goal with New England. It’s very unlikely that the Patriots lose their first two home games of the season. It’s more likely that Bill Belichick makes Jameis Winston look absolutely silly than it is that New Orleans springs an upset.

Pick: Patriots -3
