Giants news, 1/27: 2022 Draft class, Daboll honored, Parcells, more headlines

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

Assessing the Giants’ 2022 draft class: The good, and the bad, of Joe Schoen’s first draft

The New York Giants’ 2022 draft class is one that is hard to quantify. No. 5 overall pick Kayvon Thibodeaux was excellent, even if he didn’t have the huge numbers to show it. No. 7 pick Evan Neal was up and down. There were flashes of promise from several players. There were far too many injuries — to the point where it will almost feel like the Giants enter the 2023 season with two rookie classes.

BBV's Ed Valentine goes through class members WR Wan’ Dale Robinson, G Joshua Ezeudu, CB Cor’Dale Flott, TE Daniel Bellinger, S Dane Belton, LB Micah McFadden, DT D.J. Davidson, G Marcus McKethan, and LB Darrian Beavers.

I thought they had a great year. They have some decisions to make with their quarterback, Daniel Jones, and their running back, Saquon Barkley. They’ll try to hold onto those guys and build from there. But the one thing I’ll say about the Giants on the negative side is they haven’t beaten the heavyweights in their division. They lost to Dallas twice, and they lost to Philadelphia three times. So, they’ve got to get a better foothold in their own division if they expect improvement next year.

The Giants would like Saquon Barkley back, but the deal needs to work for both sides. Here are some ideas how to make that happen.

Giants aren’t ‘back’ yet: What Joe Schoen, Brian Daboll must do to avoid one-hit wonder | The Athletic

Schoen seems to fully grasp that he is still in the early stages of a rebuild, even if the first year puts him ahead of schedule. That early success is important because it will help Daboll establish the culture in the locker room, and it will grant Schoen equity with ownership and fans.

There should be total trust in Schoen’s stewardship after he maintained restraint during his first year on the job. He didn’t sacrifice valuable draft picks in a deal for the flawed wide receivers available at the trade deadline, and he impressively managed to avoid pushing any more money from Kenny Golladay’s albatross contract into the future, even though a restructure could have allowed the Giants to add a veteran defensive lineman during the season.
