Super Bowl Squares Strategy Guide

Feb 5, 2023 - 12:25 PM

Super Bowl LVII will take place in Arizona on February 12 between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs.

The public and oddsmakers believe we’ll get plenty of action in this game. The spread is tight, and the total has trended up to 50.

That means there’s a solid probability that both teams will end up putting up a solid number of points and give us a very close game.

That’s critical for Super Bowl Squares.

For those unfamiliar, Super Bowl Squares is one of the more popular ways to get skin in the game with a large group of friends or family. Even if you know nothing about football or what you’re watching, you’ve got a chance at winning.

While Super Bowl Squares are typically random, there’s still strategy involved at the end of the day. Here’s my guide to giving yourself the best chance to win your Super Bowl squares pool.

Super Bowl Squares Strategy Guide: Super Bowl LVII

Let’s take a look at our best strategies for Super Bowl LVII.

How Squares Pools Work

There will be one official grid. That grid will have ten columns and ten rows.

Some pools allow for multiple boxes. Others allow for just one box. It really depends on how many people are involved with the pool. When given the opportunity, you will pick as many squares as you’re allowed and write your name on them.

After all the boxes are complete, each column and row will have numbers 0-9 randomly inserted for each row and column.

Each team also gets assigned the numbers for its column or row. Let’s say that the Eagles are the column number and Chiefs are the row number.

The goal is to have the final digit in each team’s score at the end of each quarter.

If the Kansas City Chiefs lead the Philadelphia Eagles, 3-0 after one quarter, the person with the 3 at the top and 0 on the side will end up winning the first-quarter payout.

The Numbers You Want

The most common score in the NFL is 20-17, followed by 27-24.

In football, it’s hard to add one or two points in a game. Safties are rare and extra points are usually automatic, unless you’re Brett Maher.

Anyway, if you think about the common scores in the NFL, you’d think about 0, 3, 6, 7, 10, 13, 14, 17, 20, 21, 24, 27, 30, 31, 35, and so forth.

Obviously, other scores can be earned with more field goal attempts, a safety, or missed extra points. But you want your squares to have the most common outcomes.

At the end of the day, a 0 and 7 will give you the best chance at winning your squares, especially early in the game. In some games, the score won’t even change with no points in a quarter. There’s always a chance to win a portion of Super Bowl Squares more than once with the same numbers.

The Good, Not Great Numbers

The best numbers are 7, 0, and 3.

But common outcomes in the NFL also include 1, 4, and 6.

Any of those numbers give you a real chance at winning a quarter of Super Bowl Squares.

The Ugly Numbers

In football, it’s harder to get 2, 5, 8, or 9.

However, 28 and 35 are common numbers, especially with the way the offenses have played for the Chiefs and Eagles. 28 would mean four touchdowns and 35 would mean five touchdowns.

A 35-28 game isn’t out of question and is a true possibility. So having bad numbers doesn’t mean you’re eliminated right away.

How to Choose Your Squares

If you’re looking to grab multiple squares, try and spread out your squares. If you put all of your squares in the same boxes and get dealt a bad column or row, you’ve hurt your chances with multiple squares.

The more you spread out, the better chance you have of actually getting solid numbers in the pool.

Why the Super Bowl Matchup Matters

With the total sitting at 50 and the Eagles listed as -1.5 favorites, the oddsmakers are implying that the Eagles will win 26-24. 27-24 is probably the more like scenario.

Therefore, if you have Eagles (7) and Chiefs (4), and that’s the final score, you’d win a quarter of Super Bowl Squares.
