Giants news, 2/8: Tierney, Groh, Sirianni responds to Love, more headlines

Feb 8, 2023 - 11:00 AM

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

What’s next for Giants if Mike Kafka gets Arizona Cardinals’ head-coaching job?

New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka is one of only two known remaining candidates for the Arizona Cardinals’ head-coaching job, the other being Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo. Unless a mystery candidates emerges, that means there is a 50-50 chance the Giants will need a new offensive play-caller in 2023.

BBV's looks at four different scenarios on who will bethe play caller next year.

At the top are two internal candidates—quarterback coach Shea Tierney and wide receivers coach Mike Groh. Tierney has been with Daboll for five seasons while Groh has previous as an offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2018 and 2019.

Daboll could decide to call the plays himself. As Ed Valentine notes, that isn’t the ideal solution because it impacts his ability to coach the full team and manage games.

The Giants could look outside the organization as well. After all, Kafka did not have a link to Daboll before being hired last year and that turned out pretty well.

“As far as that goes, the secret to good coaching is to get good players, put them in good positions to succeed, and help them get better,” Sirianni said. “That’s what the secret of good coaching is. I think a lot has been made about when I looked into the camera and did that. But to me, the camera got right in my face. We went up 21-0, and we were having fun. I’m not going to be somebody who I’m not. I’m going to have fun on the sideline, and I’m going to yell and scream on the sideline.”

“At the end of the day, I mean, I don’t really got nothing to say about that,” Toney said with a laugh when asked if he was unfairly judged during his time with the Giants. “It’s going to be whatever. I’m just going to focus on what I’ve got to do now. I’m not worried about nothing in the past.”

NEW YORK GIANTS: QB DANIEL JONES ($32,416,000) 2022 Player WAR/Rank: 2.43 (12th). A big reason the Giants are working hard to get a long-term deal done with either Jones or Saquon Barkley before the March 7 tag deadline is so they then have the tag freed up for the other player, if necessary.

Other option: RB Saquon Barkley ($10,091,000). Things can move quickly in either negotiation, but the Giants have reportedly been working with Barkley’s camp longer. While they appear open to a long-term commitment to Jones, it may be wise to want to see another year where he can put up more than 3,200 passing yards on 6.8 yards per attempt with just 15 touchdown passes on a 6.4-yard average depth of target.
