Stewart, Winnik leads Avalanche past Flames

Oct 29, 2010 - 6:11 AM CALGARY, Alberta (AP) -- Daniel Winnik made sure Chris Stewart's second career hat trick didn't go to waste.

Winnik scored with 2:20 left in regulation to give the Colorado Avalanche a 6-5 comeback victory over the Calgary Flames on Thursday night.

"It was a total team effort," said Stewart, who scored once in the first period and added goals 29 seconds apart in the second to tie it at 3. "It's great to see that we're getting scoring from (all) lines. It's just exciting to watch out there."

Stewart has eight goals and six assists in 10 games this season. He also had three goals last March against St. Louis.

"Confidence is a big thing right now," Stewart said. "I come to the rink every day and I try to get better. That's the attitude I've got."

Brandon Yip and T.J. Galiardi also scored for Colorado, while John-Michael Liles' NHL record for the longest assists streak by a defenseman to begin a season ended at nine.

"We got contributions from a lot of different guys," Colorado coach Joe Sacco said. "Three points out of four on this road trip is a lot to be proud of."

The Avalanche snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 5-4-1 and ended the Flames' winning streak at three

"Especially against these guys, it's good to get a win," Winnik said. "It's always nice to get a goal, but it's especially nice to get the game-winner."

Niklas Hagman, Tim Jackman, Matt Stajan, Olli Jokinen and Alex Tanguay scored for Calgary.

"Our best players - outside of Olli - weren't very good, bottom line," Calgary coach Brent Sutter said. "You give up six goals in the NHL, you're not going to win very many games. When you've got a 3-1 lead in your own building with that much time left, you nail it down. Good teams, that's what they do."

With goalie Craig Anderson out of the lineup with a knee injury, Peter Budaj made his second straight start for the Avs. He stopped 14 shots to improve to 2-0-1.

Calgary goalie Henrik Karlsson made 30 saves in his home debut.

Yip tied it early in the third when he backhanded a low shot to the far side behind Karlsson, and Galiardi converted a feed from Paul Stastny to put Colorado in front.

Tanguay made a nice move to backhand a shot past Budaj to tie it at 5, but Winnik fired a low shot to the far side past Karlsson for the winner.

NOTES: The Flames honored Craig Conroy for playing his 1,000th NHL game. "All the fun stuff before was awesome," Conroy said. "I took that all in. I would have loved to have gotten the win tonight, but it just didn't happen, so we have to regroup and win the next one." ... With Anderson out of the lineup, Colorado recalled John Grahame from Lake Erie of the AHL.
