McDonald helps Blues end skids

Nov 20, 2010 - 8:59 AM St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Andy McDonald notched his 150th career goal as St. Louis snapped a pair of lengthy streaks in its 5-2 decision over Ottawa at Scottrade Center.

Brad Boyes and Carlo Colaiacovo posted a goal and an assist each for the Blues, who put the brakes on a five-game losing skid.

David Backes contributed two helpers and Ty Conklin made 18 stops for St. Louis, which snapped an 0-5-1 skid against Ottawa and picked up their first win over their Canadian foes since November 27, 2001.

Mike Fisher and Jesse Winchester hit the net for the Senators, who have lost three in a row and four of their last five.

Brian Elliott was tagged for all five goals on 33 shots in the setback, his third straight loss.

"It's not the goalie's fault," said Senators center Chris Kelly. "I don't know if there's been a game that it has been the goalie's fault. It's a team effort. We didn't do him any favors by playing the way we did in the second period."

McDonald put St. Louis up 4-1 at 8:41 of the third period on a solo effort. He collected the puck in the neutral zone on the left side, swooped across center ice and down the right wing before switching from backhand to forehand in the low slot and chipping the puck over Elliott's glove.

Patrik Berglund upped the advantage to four goals on a man advantage with just under six minutes remaining when he used a Colaiacovo dish and ripped a one- timer home from the right circle.

Winchester answered for the Senators at the 15:41 mark to cap the scoring.

The Senators got on the board at the 9:18 mark of the first when Fisher cruised down the left wing and sent a backhander over Conklin.

The Blues took a two-goal edge to the second intermission thanks to three scores in a span of one minute, 26 seconds just after the midway point of regulation.

Alex Pietrangelo shot from the right point, where Backes tipped it over to the left side. Boyes was alone in front to take the pass and score into a half- open cage for a man-advantage tally at 10:13.

Colaiacovo followed up a broken play and ripped a shot home from the left circle at 11:04 and 35 seconds later Eric Brewer then took a drop pass from T.J Hensick at the left point, and his floater knuckled through the air and settled into the net under the crossbar.

"Got those three goals, and [we] didn't pull back at all," Boyes said. "We kept going at them, kept forcing them, still worked to get the next one, and we did, which is important for us."

Game Notes

During their losing streak against the Senators, the Blues dropped two games and tied once on home ice...Boyes now has gone four straight games with a goal for the first time since October 10-16, 2008...St. Louis has notched at least one power-play goal in four straight contests.
