Hedberg, Devils shut down Capitals

Nov 23, 2010 - 3:57 AM Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - Jason Arnott scored two goals and Patrik Elias and Mattias Tedenby each added a goal and assist in New Jersey's 5-0 victory over Washington at Prudential Center.

Dainius Zubrus also potted a goal while Johan Hedberg turned aside 30 shots to celebrate his 300th career game in net with a victory.

Hedberg notched his first shutout of the year and the 15th of his career.

Braden Holtby suffered the loss after stopping only 18 of 23 shots for the Capitals, who have dropped three in a row and were shut out twice in the process.

"The first period I knew this was going to be a team that was going to be very dangerous," Washington head coach Bruce Boudreau said. "They played a very good game in St. Louis and they are close to turning the corner. It's a team that hasn't been scoring, so once they got a couple goals, they started to feel good about themselves. They got two pretty easy goals in the first period, but we didn't do enough energy-wise and everything else-wise to stop them."

The Devils, who had scored only three goals in their prior three games, tallied three times in the first period to take control of the contest.

Elias tipped in a pass from Tedenby on a give-and-go on the power play to give the hosts a 1-0 lead 5:49 into the game.

Arnott's wraparound goal made it 2-0 at 16:15 and Tedenby went forehand to backhand to beat Holtby on a penalty shot two minutes later that extended the lead to three.

"He skates so well that he makes something happen each time he's out there," said New Jersey head coach John MacLean about the 19-year-old rookie Tedenby.

The Devils added two more goals in the first half of the second period on an Arnott snap shot at 2:43 and a Zubrus backhander off a rebound in front five minutes later.

Defenseman Mark Fayne, recalled under emergency conditions earlier in the day, became the ninth New Jersey player to make his NHL debut this season setting a franchise record...The Devils honored the late Pat Burns, who guided them to the 2003 Stanley Cup title, with a video tribute and moment of silence prior to the game...Andy Greene added two assists for the Devils, who evened the season series at a game apiece...Injured defenseman Tom Poti missed a sixth straight game and winger Mike Knuble sat out his second in a row for the Caps.
