Hall lifts Oilers over Blues in OT
Dec 5, 2010 - 6:51 AM Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Taylor Hall scored a breakaway goal only 23 seconds into overtime to give Edmonton a 2-1 victory over St. Louis at Rexall Place. The goal was set up when Blues forward Andy McDonald slipped at the top of the blue line and hit his head on Shawn Horcoff's leg. The puck bounced toward mid-ice where Hall picked it up and was able to wrist it past Jaroslav Halak.
"I think that was my first breakaway this year," Hall said. "It is nice to get on a breakaway. It's all about feel. You have to know when to go."
Ryan Jones also tallied for the Oilers, who have won four straight and opened a six-game homestand with the win. Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 31 shots in the win.
Eric Brewer had the lone goal for St. Louis, which have lost five straight and 10 of its last 13 games. Halak stopped 24 of the 26 shots he faced in the loss.
"Well we got the point. We'll take that and leave the game the way it is," Brewer said. "We did a lot of good things. We just have to find ways to generate more offense and create more chances."
The scoreless stalemate was broken 2:32 into the final frame on Jones' sixth goal of the season. Sam Gagner dumped the puck from his own zone and Magnus Paajarvi collected it on the move leading a 2-on-1 break. He then made an easy backhand pass to Jones, who poked it past Halak.
Erik Johnson spun around a defender at the right point and found a wide open Brewer, who rifled it from the top left circle for the equalizer with 6:27 left in the game.
