Doan helps Phoenix down Dallas

Dec 12, 2010 - 7:11 AM Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Shane Doan recorded two goals and Keith Yandle posted a goal and a pair of assists as Phoenix steamrolled Dallas, 5-2.

Ray Whitney notched a goal and a helper for Phoenix, which snapped a three- game losing streak on home ice. Lauri Korpikoski also tallied while Ilya Bryzgalov turned away 33 shots between the pipes for his 12th win of the season.

"We stressed going into this game, the last few days and during practice, how important this game is," Yandle said. "They're ahead of us in the standings. They're a division rival team. It's good that we can come together like that."

James Neal and Loui Eriksson both lit the lamp for the Stars, who have lost three of their last four games. Andrew Raycroft gave up five goals on 30 shots before he was benched for the contest's final 9 1/2 minutes.

"Tonight, it wasn't from a lack of effort and it wasn't from a lack of staying with it," said Stars head coach Marc Crawford. "I guess you need a little bit of puck luck."

Phoenix scored just more than six minutes into the game, behind Radim Vrbata's forechecking, which scrounged up the puck on the backboards. He was able to center the puck to Whitney, who put it home.

Eric Belanger then set up Doan for his first goal of the game to give the Coyotes a 2-0 edge only 7:19 into the contest.

Phoenix took a decisive three-goal edge with 23 seconds remaining in the first, while on the power play. Whitney ripped a shot from the left side that was deflected directly to Doan on the far side, and Doan shoveled the puck into the open net.

Dallas got on the scoreboard 3:11 into the middle stanza, when Neal trailed a 3-on-3 rush and finished it with a hard wrister past Bryzgalov.

But the Coyotes restored their three-goal lead 62 seconds into the final frame with a short-handed goal. Vernon Fiddler passed to Korpikoski at center ice for a breakaway chance, and Korpikoski was able to finish with a backhand shot between Raycroft's pads.

The blowout continued midway through the final period when Lee Stempniak led a 2-on-1 rush and sent a cross-ice pass to Yandle, who slapped it past Raycroft. The Dallas netminder was then pulled and Richard Bachman replaced him, finishing the game with four saves.

Eriksson added a late power-play goal for Dallas after stuffing in a Brenden Morrow shot that bounced off the backboards.

Game Notes

The Coyotes start a six-game road trip Wednesday in New Jersey...Dallas will play at San Jose on Monday...Stars goaltender Kari Lehtonen missed a third consecutive game because of back spasms...Doan had a chance to get his first career hat trick during the final minutes of the game, but his slap shot from the right circle rang off the post.
