Kiprusoff solid as Flames top Sabres

Dec 28, 2010 - 5:49 AM Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Olli Jokinen and David Moss both had a goal and an assist, and the Calgary Flames won their second straight game with a 5-2 rout of Buffalo.

Jarome Iginla, Ales Kotalik and Tom Kostopoulos also scored for the Flames while Miikka Kiprusoff made 25 saves for the win, including 12 in the second period.

The Sabres got goals from Drew Stafford and Patrick Kaleta, but remained winless in their three trips to Calgary in the last seven years and two months.

Ryan Miller made 28 saves in the loss.

Buffalo played its first game since leading scorer Derek Roy tore his left quadriceps in a loss against the Panthers on Thursday, an injury that will sideline him the rest of the season.

The Sabres havent won in Calgary since October 18, 2003, and they took the early lead when Stafford made a nice move in front and scored off the skate of a Flames player.

The Flames only had six shots in the first period, getting off to a rusty start in their first game in four days.

"It was probably a little bit slow on both sides. To their credit, they came out and won the first period," Iginla said.

But it was almost all Calgary after that.

Jokinen and Iginla both tallied in the second period, with Iginla moving the Flames ahead for good when he accepted a lead pass in the slot and scored on a wrister with 3:47 left in the frame.

Kotalik snapped a shot from the left circle that beat Miller up top and Moss' rebound goal gave Calgary a 4-1 lead 6:48 into the third.

Kaleta drew the Sabres within two goals with 3:05 remaining, but Kostopoulos scored on a power play in the final seconds for the final margin.

"We got the lead and the next 40 minutes it was just poor decisions on our part," said Buffalo center Jochen Hecht. "We just have to focus and do our job out there."
