Theodore slams door on Bruins as Wild win again in Boston
Jan 7, 2011 - 7:29 AM Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Jose Theodore stopped 35 shots to help the Minnesota Wild take a 3-1 win over the Boston Bruins at TD Garden.Cal Clutterbuck had a goal and an assist while Mikko Koivu and Martin Havlat each added a goal for the Wild, who tied a season-high with their third straight win.
Minnesota has won all six contests it has played against the Bruins in Boston since joining the NHL in 2000.
Steven Kampfer notched the lone goal for the Bruins, who have dropped three of four. Tuukka Rask stopped 31-of-33 shots in the loss.
"He deserved a better fate. He gave us a chance to win. I feel bad for him," Bruins head coach Claude Julien said of Rask.
Boston came into the game having notched at least a point in six straight contests (4-0-2).
After a scoreless first period, Minnesota took a 1-0 lead courtesy of the power play at 4:45 of the second. The goal happened just four seconds after Shawn Thornton was called for tripping as Patrick O'Sullivan won a left circle faceoff over to Havlat, who skated to the front and backhanded the disc past Rask.
Boston tied the game at the 10:50 mark. Pressure in the Minnesota end resulted in a turnover picked up by Patrice Bergeron, who threw a shot on net from the left circle. Theodore made the stop, but the rebound came out front and Kampfer snapped it home.
Rask was able to keep it a tie game on a beautiful save with 2 1/2 minutes to play in the second. Havlat got the puck at the right side and saw a wide open net in front of him. He flung the puck into the opening, but Rask was able to dive back and knock it out of the air with his glove.
Just 2:22 into the third, the Wild took a 2-1 lead. Marc Savard had the puck along the deep right boards and attempted a clear across the ice, but it went to the left circle onto the stick of Clutterbuck, whose quick shot beat Rask for his 12th goal of the season.
Boston pulled Rask for the extra attacker, but Koivu was able to seal the win with an empty-netter.
