Bergeron's hat trick helps Bruins crush Senators in Boston
Jan 12, 2011 - 3:14 AM Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Patrice Bergeron notched his first career hat trick and Tim Thomas stopped all 31 shots he faced as Boston crushed Ottawa, 6-0, at TD Garden.Tyler Seguin and Brad Marchand registered a goal and assist each for the Bruins, who have won two in a row and maintained their two-point lead (53-51) in the Northeast Division over Montreal after the Canadiens won in Manhattan.
Blake Wheeler also tallied and Thomas posted his league-best sixth whitewash for Boston, which hosts Eastern Conference leader Philadelphia on Thursday.
Brian Elliott was shelled in defeat for five goals on 27 shots through two periods for the Senators, who extended their season-worst losing skid to six games.
Mike Brodeur finished with 11 saves on 12 shots.
The home team picked up where it left off from Monday night's furious late- game rally in Pittsburgh.
Bergeron put the Bruins up 1-0 at 3:33 of the first period, when he followed up a bad clear and ripped a shot under the crossbar from the right circle.
It was 2-0 at 9:47 when Wheeler moved to the right side of the crease and tapped in a centering feed from Seguin.
Boston enjoyed a three-goal edge at 2:50 of the second period on a broken play, as Bergeron started a 2-on-1 with Wheeler, and batted his own blocked pass out of the air and past Elliott.
The hosts went up by four with 5:53 left in the second after Marchand's pass from the left wing into the slot deflected off the skate of Sens defenseman Sergei Gonchar and went in.
Seguin added another tally more than a minute later for a 5-0 contest, and Bergeron capped his trifecta with a bottle-rocker from the left wing against Brodeur at 5:04 of the third period.
