Moss scores twice as Calgary defeats Ottawa
Jan 15, 2011 - 5:09 AM Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - David Moss scored twice to help the Calgary Flames take a 3-2 win over the Ottawa Senators at Scotiabank Place.Ales Kotalik scored the other goal while Anton Babchuk added two assists for the Flames, who snapped a four-game slide. Henrik Karlsson stopped 33 shots in the victory.
"That was a real good, solid win for us," said Calgary head coach Brent Sutter. "I thought we got off to a slow start, but once we got our legs underneath us we got it going. They got a couple of us in the third, but we were able to hang tight."
Nick Foligno had a goal and an assist while Milan Michalek scored the other goal for the Senators, who snapped a six-game slide with a win over the Islanders on Thursday. Brian Elliott made 23 saves in the loss.
"We had a lot of motivation for this game cause we wanted to post back-to-back wins," said Foligno. "We need to continue to win and we didn't get the job done tonight."
After a scoreless first period, the Flames took a 1-0 lead in the second. Rene Bourque skated the puck into the Ottawa end and made a backhand flip down low. Moss, who got behind the defense, received the puck in front of the net and chipped it past Elliott 5:32 in.
Calgary then made it 2-0 just 2 1/2 minutes later. Tim Jackman made a move from the right side to get in front, but lost the puck. Moss grabbed it in the slot and fired a wrister home from the right side.
Kotalik scored on the power play with 17 seconds left in the second, when his simple wrister from the left point made its way past Elliott.
Ottawa made it a two-goal game 8:56 into the third as a Calgary player missed the puck at his right point and it went into the Flames' end. At the left circle, Foligno caught up to it and lasered a wrister into the net.
The Sens made it a 3-2 game with 57.4 seconds left and Elliott on the bench for the extra attacker. Foligno passed from the high slot to the right for Michalek, who made the power move to the front and chipped it in.
Ottawa quickly got Elliott out of the net again after the faceoff, but Calgary was able to keep any scoring chances away for the win.
