Columbus comes back to beat Blues
Jan 23, 2011 - 7:08 AM St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Andrew Murray notched the winner early in the third period, while Rick Nash and Fedor Tyutin posted late-game tallies as Columbus rallied past St. Louis, 5-2, at Scottrade Center.Antoine Vermette and Jared Boll also hit the net for the Blue Jackets, who scored the final five goals of the contest to win their second straight game and third in 10.
Steve Mason picked up the positive decision with 19 saves.
"You never like to get down like that," said Nash of Columbus' early two-goal deficit. "It's tough when you're on the road and put yourself in that spot with two goals. But the defense was helping out everywhere, even on offense. That's what we need to do to win."
Eric Brewer and Patrik Berglund provided the only offense for the Blues, who have dropped eight of their last 10. Jaroslav Halak surrendered four goals in defeat.
Murray put the Jackets ahead to stay at 3:40 of the final period when he tipped in a Jan Hejda chance.
Nash extended the margin to two on a power play with 3:28 remaining, as he one-timed a Derick Brassard touch pass by Halak from the right circle.
The Blues went with an extra attacker with well over two minutes remaining but the move backfired as Tyutin put the clincher into the empty net with 90 seconds to play.
St. Louis led 2-0 just 7 1/2 minutes into the contest. Brewer lit the lamp at 6:07 when his shot was deflected just enough to pop over Mason's shoulder and Berglund followed on a power play 1:23 later.
Vermette countered for the Jackets at 11:19, then Boll evened the score with 7:36 played in the second period on a backhander through Halak's pads.
"I thought we came out with good jump, good pace," said Steen. "We got a couple fights and a couple goals. We started to get off the rails in the second period. We came out with the intent to get pucks on the net, but they got that third goal."
Game Notes
The Blue Jackets hadn't won in regulation in St. Louis since March 27, 2007...Columbus defenseman Rostislav Klesla left the game late in the third period and did not return with an apparent upper-body injury suffered when he collided with a Blues player while contesting a puck behind the goal line.
