Panthers edge Lightning in shootout
Feb 20, 2011 - 4:12 AM Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Mike Santorelli tied the game with three minutes left in regulation and scored in the first round of the shootout, as the Florida Panthers took down the Tampa Bay Lightning, 3-2, at St. Pete Times Forum.David Booth also lit the lamp in regulation for the Panthers, who snapped a two-game skid. Scott Clemmensen made 34 saves.
Marc-Andre Bergeron and Sean Bergenheim scored for the Lightning, who fell to 5-3-2 on their 12-game homestand. Dan Ellis turned aside 24-of-26 shots.
Defenseman Eric Brewer made his Tampa Bay debut. The Lightning acquired Brewer from the Blues on Friday in exchange for defensive prospect Brock Beukeboom and a third-round pick in the upcoming draft.
Trailing 2-1, Santorelli scored a power-play goal with three minutes left in the third. Ellis stopped Cory Stillman's shot from the point, but Santorelli jammed home the rebound.
Just 2:20 into overtime, Radek Dvorak of the Panthers was sent to box for tripping. The Lightning failed to score with the man advantage, despite Steven Stamkos hitting the post.
Santorelli got the shootout started with a top-shelf wrist shot. Adam Hall, Dominic Moore and Steve Downie were stopped by Clemmensen.
The Lightning drew first blood at the 4:45 mark of the first period. Bergeron's slapper from the top of the right circle got past Clemmensen.
Booth scored on the power play just 24 seconds into the second to make it 1-1. Dennis Wideman's shot from the right circle was deflected into the back of the net by Booth.
Tampa Bay went ahead 2-1 on Bergenheim's goal just 14 seconds into the third. Hall stopped a clearing attempt along the right boards and fired a shot on net. Moore deflected the disc and Bergenheim batted the puck past Clemmensen.
Game Notes
The Panthers have taken 3-of-4 from the Lightning this season...Tampa Bay defenseman Matt Smaby missed his third straight game with flu-like symptoms...Florida started a four-game road trip on Saturday.
