Chicago dampens Flames, runs win streak to six
Mar 3, 2011 - 7:54 AM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Jonathan Toews scored twice to help the Chicago Blackhawks take a 6-4 win over the Calgary Flames at United Center.Michael Frolik had a goal and two assists while Dave Bolland, Marian Hossa and Brian Campbell each had a goal and an assist for the Blackhawks, who are on a season-high six-game winning streak. Corey Crawford stopped 21 shots in the victory.
"We're not looking at it as a streak cause we've been playing good for a while now," said Toews. "We're not gonna look too far ahead. We'll use the momentum we've got and keep working hard out there."
Jarome Iginla finished the game with a goal and two assists while Rene Bourque scored twice for the Flames, who were coming off a home-and-home sweep of the St. Louis Blues. Miikka Kiprusoff was pulled after the second period as he gave up four goals on 19 shots. Henrik Karlsson stopped 9-of-10 shots in the third.
A two-goal second period gave Chicago a 4-1 lead after 40 minutes, but the Flames came out hard in the third and made it a one-goal game.
The first goal came just 84 seconds in when Bourque lifted the puck over Crawford from the low right side and a one-timer from Iginla in the slot off a feed from Alex Tanguay made it a 4-3 game at the 8:44 mark.
Chicago, though, got some insurance just over two minutes later when a one- timer by Bolland from the right circle gave the team a 5-3 lead.
The Flames once again made it a one-goal game when Iginla's slap shot from a sharp angle at the right side trickled though Crawford over to the left where Bourque slammed it home with 3:56 to play.
Calgary later got Karlsson out of the net for the extra attacker, but Hossa sealed the win with the empty-netter.
"We were not good defensively. We gave up over 20 scoring chances, and that's not good enough," Flames head coach Brent Sutter said.
Toews scored 6:46 into the game while Tanguay lit the lamp on the power play halfway through the first frame.
Frolik scored his first goal with Chicago and first in 32 games at the 18:25 mark of the first when he chipped it in as he crashed the net.
Campbell's streaking one-timer from the top of the right circle gave Chicago a power-play goal and a 3-1 lead with 4:49 left in the second while Toews scored on a nice individual effort 1:22 later for a 4-1 lead.
