Halak, Blues blank Oilers

Mar 25, 2011 - 5:59 AM
St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Jaroslav Halak needed to make just 12 saves for his sixth shutout of the year, and St. Louis tallied three times in the third period en route to a 4-0 decision over Edmonton at Scottrade Center.

Halak recorded his 15th career whitewash, improving to 23-20-6 this season.

"They played good defensively, but you gotta make something happen. You gotta put pucks in," said Edmonton forward Magnus Paajarvi.

T.J. Oshie notched a goal and assist for the Blues, who had dropped four of their last five coming in. Matt D'Agostini, Chris Stewart and Adam Cracknell supplied late tallies for the home team.

Nikolai Khabibulin allowed all four goals on 30 shots for the Oilers, who suffered their eighth straight defeat.

Oshie put the Blues on the board with 1:32 left in the second period when he snaked along the right wing and scored just under the crossbar from a sharp angle near the goal line.

D'Agostini made it 2-0 at 2:12 of the third period on a power play by slipping a shot between Khabibulin's pads and Stewart tallied for a three-goal game at 8:30 on another St. Louis advantage.

Cracknell one-timed a Kevin Shattenkirk feed home from the left circle for a 4-0 game with 4:53 remaining.

Halak had an easy time in the final 20 minutes, confronted by just two Edmonton shots.

"It was a game that could have gone either way in those first two periods. We didn't play our kind of hockey in those two periods," said Blues head coach Davis Payne. "Good thing we did in the third."
