Hossa's power-play goal in OT lifts Chicago over Detroit

Mar 29, 2011 - 5:05 AM Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Marian Hossa scored a power-play goal 51 seconds into overtime, and the Chicago Blackhawks earned a critical two points with a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena.

Detroit's Henrik Zetterberg, who tied the game with the man advantage early in the third period, was called for hooking with 3.7 seconds left in regulation.

It didn't take the Blackhawks long to convert as Hossa took a pass from Patrick Kane and let go a slap shot from the left circle that beat Joey MacDonald.

Jonathan Toews and Brent Seabrook also tallied for Chicago, which has won three of its last four games. Corey Crawford made 33 saves to notch his 30th win of the season.

"We need any point we can get," Toews said.

The Blackhawks remained eighth in the Western Conference standings, one point behind seventh-place Anaheim and three points ahead of ninth-place Calgary.

MacDonald, starting in place of Jimmy Howard, stopped 38 shots for the Red Wings, who have dropped four of five. Howard missed the game after suffering an upper-body injury Saturday against Toronto.

"You knew (the Blackhawks) were going to come out hard because they're fighting for that last playoff spot," MacDonald said.

Detroit is six points ahead of Nashville for first place in the Central Division. The Red Wings also moved one point ahead of San Jose for second overall in the West.

Chicago grabbed an early 1-0 lead as Toews scored on a rebound 2:54 after the game's opening faceoff.

Lidstrom tied it up with a blast from the blue line at the 7:36 mark of the first period. The Swede became the first NHL defenseman over 40 years of age to record 60 points in a season.

Seabrook netted a power-play goal to put the Blackhawks up 2-1 with 6:42 left in the first.

Detroit pulled even when Zetterberg's pass to Danny Cleary deflected off the skate of Blackhawks defenseman Chris Campoli and behind Crawford at 2:25 of the third period.

Moments later, Chicago's Tomas Kopecky had a potential go-ahead goal waved off because of a kicking motion.
