Iginla lifts Flames over Blues
Apr 2, 2011 - 4:21 AM St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Jarome Iginla's goal with 5:03 to play was the 1,000th point of his career and it gave the Calgary Flames a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Blues. It was a huge two points for Calgary as the team now has 89 points to move three points back of Chicago for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. However, Calgary has just three games to play while Chicago, which also won on Friday, has five.
"To win that game it keeps our hopes alive," said Iginila. "We want to make sure we're doing our part in trying to keep those chances alive. We want to put the pressure on them to win games, as opposed to us losing games for them."
Iginla finished with two goals and an assist while Alex Tanguay had a goal and two assists for the Flames, who had dropped four of five coming in. Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 25 shots in the win.
David Backes had a goal and an assist while Matt D'Agostini also scored for the Blues, who had won three of four prior to Friday's contest. Jaroslav Halak made 22 saves in defeat.
"Obviously we're not happy with how things turned out," said Backes. "It's a learning experience and we have to figure out how to buckle down when we have the lead."
Calgary trailed by a goal to start the third, but the team tied it on a 2-on-1 break. Iginla and Tanguay worked a give-and-go, with Iginla sending the puck from the right back to the left and Tanguay slamming it into the open net at the 8:01 mark.
Calgary then took its first lead of the game when Iginla was sprung by Tangauy, skated down the right wing and from the circle he buried a wrister for point No. 1,000 in his career.
From there Kiprusoff stopped the shots to keep the Flames in the playoff hunt.
D'Agostini scored the only goal of the first period on the power play with 7:40 left in the frame and Backes made it a 2-0 game at the 14:27 mark of the second with his 29th goal of the season.
Iginla scored with 4:12 left in the middle frame to get Calgary on the board.
