O'Reilly helps Avs rally past Coyotes in shootout

Apr 2, 2011 - 6:38 AM Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Ryan O'Reilly scored the tying goal late in regulation then netted the winner in the shootout as Colorado blew a two-goal lead but rebounded to top Phoenix, 4-3.

Philippe Dupuis and Jay McClement tallied in regulation for the Avalanche, who halted a four-game losing skid.

"We played a solid game all around," O'Reilly said.

Peter Budaj stopped 35 shots through 65 minutes of play, then all three chances in the shootout to snag the win.

Lee Stempniak, Ray Whitney and Shane Doan hit the net for the Coyotes, who moved within three points of idle San Jose for first place in the Pacific Division.

Ilya Bryzgalov made just 17 saves for the loss, and remained tied with Bob Essensa for most wins in Jets/Coyotes franchise history with 129.

O'Reilly ended the second round by scoring with a wrister, and Budaj stopped Whitney's chance to begin the third and end the contest.

"We had chances to get two points, but we couldn't get all the way back," Coyotes head coach Dave Tippett said.

Dupuis tallied with 24 seconds left in the first period to give Colorado the lead, and McClement doubled the Avs' edge at 7:16 of the second.

Stempniak halved the Coyotes' deficit with 3:31 left in the second period, and a second-chance rebound at 2:46 of the third period from Whitney evened the game.

Doan rifled home a shot from the left circle on a power play with 7:37 left and Phoenix led 3-2.

Colorado tied the game, 3-3, with 4:31 on the clock when O'Reilly found space on the short side from the top of the left circle.

Game Notes

Phoenix fell to 6-0-2 on April Fool's Day since moving from Winnipeg in 1996...The Coyotes won the season series 3-0-1 and finished their season-high six-game homestand 3-2-1.
