Bruins take 2-0 series lead with OT win in Philly

May 3, 2011 - 5:18 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - David Krejci scored the winner at the 14-minute mark of overtime to give the Boston Bruins a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series.

Flyers defenseman Braydon Coburn had the puck behind the left side of his net and attempted to wrap it around the boards, but Nathan Horton kept it from going out. From the top of the right circle, he sent it over to the slot and Krejci's one-timer appeared to hit the back pipe.

The goal was initially waved off, but at the next whistle the play was reviewed. Replays showed the puck hit the rear brace of the net before ricocheting back into play, giving Boston the win and a 2-0 lead in the best- of-seven series.

"He picked it up and he made a nice play," said Krejci about the goal. "I wanted to get a good one-timer and it worked. I thought it was in but then they kept playing so I just wanted to finish up on the shift and then the ref took a look at it and it was in."

Chris Kelly and Brad Marchand both had a goal in regulation while Tim Thomas stopped 52 shots for the Bruins, who will return home for the next two games with Game 3 set for Wednesday.

"Yeah, it's great to come in and get the two wins but we are far from done," said Kelly. "Obviously, Montreal did this same thing to us and we know they are going to come hard in Boston."

James van Riemsdyk had both goals for the Flyers, who fell to 2-4 at home in these playoffs.

"I think it was a great team effort, a good response game from us," said van Riemsdyk. "But unfortunately that doesn't mean much because we didn't win the game."

Brian Boucher left in the second period with an apparent hand injury, but came back for the third and played the rest of the game. He allowed all three goals on 35 shots while Sergei Bobrovsky stopped all six shots he faced in nearly nine minutes of action in the second period.

This series is shaping up much like last year's semifinal series between these two clubs. Last spring, the Bruins took the first two games at home and the first game in Philly for a 3-0 series lead.

However, the Flyers won the next four games to become just the third squad in NHL history to rally from a 3-0 deficit to win a seven-game series.

"We have to win, we have to go to Boston and win one hockey game," said Philadelphia head coach Peter Laviolette. "Going to the well is not an easy thing to do, it's a difficult thing to do. We did it last series, we did it last year against Boston. When you lose your first two games in your home building, I would say that there is a real expectation for the Bruins to win the series now. So it relieves us of the pressure, I believe, a little bit to just go in and play a game in Boston."

It took just 29 seconds for the first goal as a 2-on-1 break for Philly saw Claude Giroux send a broken pass to the left side of the net, where van Riemsdyk finish the play for a 1-0 lead.

A bit over nine minutes later on the power play, the Flyers took a 2-0 lead when van Riemsdyk jammed the puck in from in front off a Kimmo Timonen shot.

However, the Bruins scored the next two goals to tie the game.

The first one came at the 12:50 mark of the first as a snap shot from the right circle by Tomas Kaberle saw Michael Ryder swipe at the rebound and a charging Kelly bang home that rebound.

Just 1:25 later, Boston tied the game when Patrice Bergeron sent a pass from the low right circle to the slot, where Marchand's heavy wrister beat Boucher.

On a sequence in the latter stages of the second period, Thomas made a desperate left pad save on a Nikolay Zherdev shot down low. Moments later, Boston's Milan Lucic banged a backhand off the left post with the net wide open.

Thomas made eight stops in the second period while Boucher and Bobrovsky combined to stop 13 shots.

Philly was awarded two power plays in the third period and set a franchise home playoff record with 22 shots in the frame. But Thomas was up to the task and turned all of them aside while Boucher made seven saves to force overtime.

Game Notes

The Bruins went 0-for-2 on the power play and has yet to score on the man advantage in the playoffs. They are 0-for-28 over nine games...The Flyers went 1-for-4 on the power play...Philly defenseman Chris Pronger sat out the game with an undisclosed injury. He was replaced by Danny Syvret...Philly's original playoff record for shots at home in one period was 20, accomplished in the second period of Game 2 in the semifinals against the Minnesota North Stars in 1980. The overall record is 28 on the road against Pittsburgh in Game 1 of the quarterfinals in 1997...Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid left the game with an apparent head injury. Late in the first period he crashed head-first into the boards behind the Philly net and was helped off the ice, then taken to a local hospital.
