Stars open big lead early, hold on to top Coyotes

Sep 23, 2006 - 3:41 AM DALLAS (Ticker) -- The Dallas Stars scored on consecutive shots early in the first period. That proved to be enough for Marty Turco and Tobias Stephan.

Defenseman Trevor Daley and newcomer Eric Lindros tallied 60 seconds apart early in the opening session and the Stars went on to post a 3-1 preseason triumph over the Phoenix Coyotes.

Daley got Dallas on the board at 5:04 and, with Phoenix blue-liners Derek Morris and Joe Callahan both in the penalty box, Lindros doubled the lead a minute later. The first overall pick by Quebec in the 1991 draft, Lindros inked a one-year, $1.55 million contract with the Stars over the summer.

Defenseman Janne Niinimaa made it a three-goal bulge at 2:15 of the second with a man-advantage tally, and Turco stopped 11 shots in each of the first two periods to keep the Coyotes scoreless.

Yanick Lehoux spoiled the shutout bid with 5:57 left in the third by beating Stephan, who made nine saves in the period.

Captain Mike Modano did not play for the Stars, who were outshot, 32-17.

Owen Nolan, goaltender Curtis Joseph and captain Shane Doan were rested by Phoenix, which went 0-for-11 on the power play and is scoreless on 32 man advantages this preseason.
