Red Wings beat Ducks again in Anaheim

Mar 25, 2013 - 3:26 AM Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Jimmy Howard made 33 saves, including one on Cam Fowler in the waning seconds of the game, as Detroit beat Anaheim 2-1, for the Red Wings' second victory at Honda Center in three nights.

On Friday, the Red Wings snapped Anaheim's 13-game home winning streak with a 5-1 victory thanks to Justin Abdelkader's hat trick. On Sunday, the Red Wings got goals from Daniel Cleary and Drew Miller in the first period.

"Working hard in practice pays off," Howard said. "My game has come a long way. We played a full 60 minutes tonight. This is a huge four points for us."

Ryan Getzlaf scored in the final minute of the second period for the Ducks, who received 19 stops from Jonas Hiller.

Cleary scored on the power play 4:14 into the game on a tip-in and Miller doubled the advantage 4 1/2 minutes later by putting a rebound in front by Hiller.

"Daniel's first goal was huge. Everybody is falling into their roles," Miller said. "We trust each other to make plays. Our mind set was to come in here and get wins."

Getzlaf scored with 46 seconds left in the second on a shot from the right circle.

Hiller faced only five shots in the second period and the same number in the third.

Howard flashed the glove to stop Sheldon Souray's point shot with 3:44 left in the game. At that point, a fan threw an octopus on the ice and the game was delayed a few minutes to adjust the glass on the side boards.

The Ducks took several penalties with 33.5 seconds left. Getzlaf was sent off for tripping and was given an unsportsmanlike and 10-minute misconduct. Teemu Selanne argued and was also given a 10-minute and game misconduct penalty. Corey Perry was also penalized.

Anaheim pulled Hiller in the final 30 seconds, and somehow Fowler got free in the slot, but his wide open shot was stopped by the chest of Howard.

"I'm not frustrated with the final play of the game," Getzlaf said. "Take nothing away from Detroit, they played a good game. Howard played well. I'm happy with our effort tonight. Both teams played hard and they got one more bounce than we did."
