Avs get past Coyotes in SO

Apr 27, 2013 - 6:05 AM Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Matt Duchesne capped a four-point night with the game-winning goal in the shootout to give the Colorado Avalanche a 5-4 decision over the Phoenix Coyotes at Jobing.com Arena.

Duchesne assisted on three other scores as the Avalanche spoiled the Coyotes' home finale with only their fourth road victory of the season. P.A. Parenteau added a goal and an assist to the win, which he sealed by beating Phoenix goaltender Mike Smith in the second round of the shootout.

"It didn't look pretty early, but we stuck with it," Parenteau said. "We knew we were going to get our chances tonight. It was a good team effort overall. It was fun to get a win on the road here."

After coming up with six saves in overtime, Semyon Varlamov turned back both Coyote skaters he faced in the deciding phase in relief of Jean-Sebastian Giguere, who stopped 27-of-31 shots before departing with an undisclosed injury late in the third period.

Antoine Vermette scored twice and Keith Yandle posted three assists for Phoenix, which lost for the fifth time in its last seven outings (2-2-3). Smith finished with 24 saves.

"We came out strong, but they answered back hard," Phoenix forward Rob Klinkhammer said. "It was nice to see everyone play hard. We fought hard until the end, it is a shame we couldn't bag one in."

Varlamov was up to the task after being pressed into service, sending the game to the shootout after the Avs were outshot by a 6-1 count in overtime, then made a big save with his right pad on Mikkel Boedker to begin the final segment.

Duchesne then fired a shot through Smith's pads to give Colorado the upper hand, and Parenteau sealed it with a rocket into the right corner of the net after Phoenix's Radim Vrbata failed on his attempt.

The Coyotes trailed 4-3 before Vermette was left all alone on the right side of the Colorado net on a power play late in regulation, with his tap-in off a rebound left by Giguere on a blast by Michael Stone tying the score with 5:56 left in the third period.

Phoenix quickly jumped in front during an action-packed first period on David Schlemko's first tally of the season, a wrister into the back of the net 3:17 after the initial faceoff that was held up despite Phoenix's Paul Bissonnette appearing to make contact with Giguere in the crease.

Vermette made it a 2-0 game after one-timing a drop pass from Yandle past Giguere at the 8:45 mark of the opening frame.

The Avalanche then came alive, scoring three times within a span of a little over four minutes to move ahead.

Stefan Elliott began the barrage after taking a centering pass from Duchesne and getting off a quick snap shot that Smith couldn't handle with 6:15 to go in the session. Just over three minutes later, Parenteau scored on the power play with a drive from the left point that made its way through traffic to knot the contest.

Patrick Bordeleau then knocked in a puck loose in front of the Coyotes' net one minute after Parenteau's marker to stake the Avalanche to a 3-2 lead.

Both teams tightened up on the defensive end during the second period, with Colorado maintaining its one-goal edge until the Coyotes capitalized on a man- advantage situation.

Rob Klinkhammer attempted a centering pass from the left side during the 5- on-4 phase, with the feed bouncing off Avs defenseman Greg Zanon and crossing the goal line to make the score 3-3.

The deadlock lasted until the final minute of the second, when Ryan O'Reilly beat Giguere to the stick side with a shot from the left circle on a Colorado power play. The goal came just 33.2 seconds prior to the intermission.

Game Notes

Klinkhammer returned to the Coyotes' lineup after missing Wednesday's 2-1 win over San Jose with a concussion ... The Avalanche finished 2-for-4 on the power play, with Phoenix going 2-for-6 in such situations ... Phoenix concluded their home schedule with a 14-8-2 record ... The Coyotes wrap up the season Saturday in Anaheim, with Colorado hosting Minnesota in its finale.
