Final - OT
Red Wings even series with Ducks on Brunner's OT winner
May 7, 2013 - 5:33 AM Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Damien Brunner scored at 15:10 of overtime to give the Detroit Red Wings a 3-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks in Game 4 of this Western Conference quarterfinal series.Gustav Nyquist had split the defense up the middle and tried to get a shot on net, but Jonas Hiller poked the puck away before he could get a stick on it. The puck, though, came out and there were no defenders to clear the puck and Brunner slammed it home to help the Red Wings even this best-of-seven series at 2-2.
"We knew this was a big game because we didn't want to go down 3-1 in this series," said Brunner. "You know, our first game here we couldn't get a goal and we didn't want to disappoint the fans that way again."
Pavel Datsyuk tied the game in regulation while Brendan Smith added a goal and an assist for the Red Wings, who have taken both wins in the series in overtime. Jimmy Howard made 31 stops in the win.
"The game is important, but more important it's a best-of-three right now," said Detroit head coach Mike Babcock. "The longer you can put this off, the better I like our chances."
David Steckel and Matt Beleskey scored for the Ducks, who got 46 stops from Hiller in the contest.
"Everyone knows they're a puck-possession team," said Beleskey. "So the more time you give them the better they're going to play. We had the lead twice tonight and they came back. It was our game to win tonight and we gave it back to them."
This series heads back to Anaheim where Game 5 will be played on Wednesday night.
The only goal of the first period came from Anaheim as a mix-up by the Detroit defense to the left of Howard saw Andrew Cogliano get it to Beleskey, whose first shot was stopped, but he lifted in the rebound from the right side for his second of the playoffs at 5:07.
Hiller, who turned away 13 shots in the first period, made 14 stops in the second to keep Detroit off the board, while Howard turned aside seven to keep it a one-goal deficit.
It took just 78 seconds into the third period for the Red Wings to tie the game as Smith's slap shot from the right point was going high, but it hit off a Duck and went in.
Howard preserved the lead about two minutes later when he stopped Ryan Getzlaf on a breakaway, but the Ducks took a 2-1 lead at the 10:40 mark.
On the play, a turnaround shot from Kyle Palmieri from the left circle was stopped by Howard, but Steckel was at the right side to push home the rebound.
Datsyuk, though, tied the game three minutes later as his heavy wrister went just under the crossbar for his first of the playoffs.
