Kings edge Blues in OT to take 3-2 series lead

May 9, 2013 - 6:01 AM St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Slava Voynov scored the winner eight minutes into overtime as the Los Angeles Kings took a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Blues in Game 5 of this Western Conference quarterfinal series.

Justin Williams picked up the puck in his own zone and skated down the left wing before passing the disc over to Anze Kopitar just before gaining the blueline. Kopitar then took it through the middle and fed it over to his right where Voynov let fly with a low wrister that beat Brian Elliott for the victory.

"We don't get too high we don't get too low. It is a big thing for us. The goal is just pretty much a typical overtime goal," They're never real pretty: you get the puck, you shoot it. They're greasy ones," said Kings forward Jeff Carter.

Carter scored twice while Mike Richards added two assists for the Kings, who now hold a 3-2 lead in this best-of-seven series.

Jonathan Quick turned away 34 shots to help Los Angeles head home for a potential series victory on Friday in Game 6.

Alexander Steen and Alex Pietrangelo each posted a goal for the Blues, who got 22 stops from Elliott.

"I thought we played well. We had some ups and downs throughout the course of the game but for the most part I thought we played well. Els ( Brian Elliott) was stellar. We had our chances and didn't bury them," Steen said.

After a scoreless first period, it took just 14 seconds for the Kings to take the lead in the second as a right circle faceoff win saw Drew Doughty slap the puck on net from the high slot with Richards getting the tip on net and Carter cleaning up the garbage down low.

The Blues tied the game just over six minutes later as Steen grabbed his own blocked shot along the low left boards, skated out the right side of the net and from the slot, he snapped it home for his third of the playoffs.

Skating on a power play to start the third period after Barret Jackman was called for tripping late in the second, the Kings went up thanks to Carter.

Richards had the puck at the top of the left circle and sent it down low to Kopitar, who immediately fed it to his right where Carter one-timed it in for a 2-1 lead 54 seconds in.

St. Louis continued to press and was throwing everything it had at Quick, finally breaking through late in regulation.

With Elliott on the bench for an extra attacker, a right circle faceoff win saw the puck come back to Pietrangelo, who skated over to the high slot before letting loose with a shot that made its way through bodies to tie the game with just 44.1 seconds showing.

Game Notes

The Kings went 1-for-2 on the power play while the Blues had just one man advantage, which the team failed to score on ... This is the fourth meeting between the two teams, with St. Louis winning two ... The Kings took all three meetings between the two teams in the regular season.
