Bruins top 'Canes for eighth straight win
Mar 15, 2014 - 11:28 PM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jarome Iginla scored a pair of goals and Milan Lucic added one with a pair of assists, as the Boston Bruins earned their eighth straight win with a 5-1 triumph over the Carolina Hurricanes.Chris Kelly and Torey Krug also scored, while David Krejci picked up three assists in the victory.
The winning streak is the longest for the Bruins since a 10-game run in November 2011. Boston is 11-1-2 in its last 14 games.
"It just seems like everything is clicking for us right now," said Lucic.
Chad Johnson got the start in the Boston net after Tuukka Rask played the last two games and made 29 saves. He improved to 8-0-1 in his last nine starts.
Alexander Semin scored the lone goal for Carolina, which had a modest two-game win streak stopped. Cam Ward stopped 36 shots in defeat.
"Our best players tonight did not play the way they are capable of," said Carolina head coach Kirk Muller. "It was early in the game that we had to push back and we didn't."
The Hurricanes trimmed a two-goal deficit just 3:53 into the third when Semin's shot from the right circle tipped a Boston stick in front and skipped past Johnson. Carolina then failed to convert a power play midway through the period after Reilly Smith went off tripping.
Boston put it away with a pair of goals in 13 seconds -- the fastest two scores by the Bruins this season. Kelly netted his seventh with 7:11 remaining on a nice three-way passing play with Dougie Hamilton and Krejci, before Iginla picked up his second of the game and team-best 23rd of the season from the top of the crease.
Krug finished the contest with a blast from the point with 9.4 seconds to play for his 14th goal.
Lucic opened the scoring with 4:32 remaining in the first period when he swept a shot home from the right side of the crease for his 21st goal. He then set up Boston's second goal late in the second.
After chasing down the puck and winning a battle behind the Carolina net, Lucic sent a pass toward the crease. The puck wound up behind the net again and Lucic quickly flipped a backhand pass into the left circle for Iginla, who snapped a high shot past Ward.
