Cammalleri, Flames edge Sharks in shootout
Mar 25, 2014 - 4:56 AM Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Cammalleri scored in the third round of the shootout to help the Calgary Flames to a 2-1 win over the San Jose Sharks on Monday.Cammalleri skated in on Calgary's final attempt and blew a wrister past Alex Stalock before Karri Ramo sealed the win with a stop on James Sheppard.
"We played the total team game," said Calgary head coach Bob Hartley. "I know that Karri Ramo played well, brought us some big saves at the right time, but to pick one player of the game tonight, we could have a long list. I felt that it was a real solid team effort."
Despite the loss, though, San Jose clinched a playoff spot for the 10th straight season with the point.
"This was like a yo-yo game because I thought we played well in the first and third periods, but we let go of our game in the third," said San Jose head coach Todd McLellan. "That was 20 minutes that we gave to them and that's probably the difference in the game."
Joe Colborne had the only goal of regulation for the Flames, who have won five of their last seven. Ramo stopped 33 shots in the win.
Sheppard scored for the Sharks, who have dropped three of four. Stalock made 26 saves in the loss.
San Jose scored at 18:11 of the first period when Matt Nieto skated in down the right wing and crossed over to the slot, with Sheppard charging the net. Nieto's shot was blocked by a defender, but the puck found its way to the stick of Sheppard and he shot it in for his fourth of the year.
The Flames tied the game with two minutes showing on the clock in the second period, as Tyler Wotherspoon gave a slap-pass from the left point to the low right circle where Colborne roofed in a wrister for his ninth goal of the season.
The third period and overtime passed without a marker, as Ramo stopped 12 shots and Stalock made seven.
