Bobrovsky, Blue Jackets shut out Flyers

In his first game as a visitor at Wells Fargo Center, Bobrovsky made 37 saves to lead the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 2-0 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday.

Bobrovsky's fourth shutout of the season and the eighth of his career gave the Blue Jackets their first-ever win in Philadelphia.

"Yeah (it) was special, definitely," Bobrovsky said his return to Philadelphia. "It was exciting. It was different; it's tough to explain."

James Wisniewski and Brandon Dubinsky scored for the Blue Jackets, who occupy the last wild card position in the Eastern Conference. They are 3-3-1 in their last seven games.

Steve Mason gave up two goals on 27 shots for the Flyers, who have been shut out in back-to-back games and now lead the Blue Jackets by just two points for third place in the Metropolitan Division.

Philadelphia's goalless drought is 130 minutes and 25 seconds since Vincent Lecavalier scored the tying goal in Sunday's eventual 4-3 shootout loss to Boston. Two days later, Philadelphia lost 1-0 in a shootout in St. Louis.

Bobrovsky, the reigning Vezina Trophy winner, was 42-23-10 with the Flyers in 2010-11 and 2011-12 before he was traded to Columbus on June 22, 2012, for draft picks.

Curtis McElhinney started for Columbus on Dec. 19 in Philadelphia -- a 5-4 Flyers win. Bobrovsky was out with an injury at the time, but looked sharp on Thursday.

He had 10 saves in the first and third periods and 17 in the second.

"He had a very strong game and was a big reason they won," Mason said. "They're a tough team to play against. They come at you extremely hard."

Mason had nine saves in the first period and was spotless until Wisniewski scored on a power play 17:07 into the second. His shot from the low left side slipped past Mason's left pad and hit inside the far post.

Dubinsky made it 2-0 on a deflection 3:20 into the third period, his 16th goal of the season.

Both teams have six games remaining. The Flyers will face the East-leading Bruins on Saturday in Boston and the Blue Jackets will return to Columbus for a three-game homestand starting Friday against Chicago.

Game Notes

The Blue Jackets had been 0-5-0 with one tie in Philadelphia (3-3 on Oct. 6, 2001) ... It was the fourth and final meeting of the season between the new division rivals. Columbus won the last three by a combined score of 13-5.
