Stars upend Blues in St. Louis
Mar 30, 2014 - 6:00 AM St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Colton Sceviour recorded his first career two-goal effort, while both Jordie Benn and Shawn Horcoff added two assists, as Dallas doubled up St. Louis, 4-2, at Scottrade Center.Cody Eakin and Antoine Roussel added a goal and one helper each for the Stars, who have won four of their last five and moved within a point of Phoenix for the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference.
"We're not in a must-win situation quite yet, but with the teams ahead of us winning games, we need to keep pace," Sceviour said.
Kari Lehtonen came up with 33 stops for the win, as Dallas closed out a four- game road losing streak.
Alex Steen tallied both goals and Kevin Shattenkirk posted two assists for the Blues, who saw their three-game win streak come to an end.
"Where we are right now is too inconsistent," said St. Louis head coach Ken Hitchcock. "We've got too many players who are having good games and then following it up with poor games."
Ryan Miller allowed all four goals on 27 shots in defeat. St. Louis remained one point behind Boston (108-107), which won at Washington earlier Saturday, in the race for the Presidents' Trophy.
The Blues halved their deficit at 14:16 of the second period on Steen's tip of an Alex Pietrangelo power-play blast, but the Stars countered only 25 seconds later on an Eakin's tip of a Benn floater from the left point to make it 3-1.
Steen's second power-play strike pulled the Blues within one at the 49-second mark of the third, then Roussel expanded Dallas' lead back to two just shy of eight minutes played on an individual rush.
Lehtonen made nine more stops to preserve the two-goal edge, and the Blues failed to cut into that margin further despite an extra attacker in the final 1:15 of regulation.
Sceviour opened the scoring less than four minutes in by tapping a Horcoff feed home from atop the crease.
He doubled the Dallas advantage with his second of the game at 7:21 of the middle period, redirecting a Horcoff cross-ice lead pass from the left side.
Game Notes
Dallas leads the season series 2-1-1, with a final matchup between the clubs scheduled for April 11 in the Metroplex ... Benn and defenseman Brenden Dillon were a game-best plus-3 for the Stars.
