Moulson lifts Wild past Red Wings in OT
Mar 24, 2014 - 3:28 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Moulson scored the game-winner 2:15 into overtime, as the Minnesota Wild downed the Detroit Red Wings, 4-3, in the finale of a home-and-home set Sunday at Joe Louis Arena.Just over two minutes into the extra session, Minnesota's Jonas Brodin threw a low shot on net from the right point that a cutting Moulson redirected past Jimmy Howard to snap the Wild's two-game losing streak.
"It was nice to end one before the shootout for once," Moulson said of the victory.
Charlie Coyle added a goal and an assist, while Zach Parise and Jason Pominville potted a goal apiece for Minnesota, which received 13 saves from Ilya Bryzgalov.
Gustav Nyquist tallied twice and Tomas Tatar recorded a goal and an assist for the Red Wings, who picked up a point to move into a tie with Toronto for seventh in the Eastern Conference. Washington, which was idle Sunday, sits one point back of Detroit.
"It's always gonna be disappointing when you lose a game now at this time of year," Nyquist said. "We're in real need of points with all of the teams battling for the playoffs."
Howard stopped 21 shots in the setback, which snapped Detroit's three-game win streak.
Nyquist lit the lamp twice in a 4:42 span late in the first to give the Red Wings a 2-0 lead, but the Wild responded with three straight goals to jump in front.
Pominville trimmed the margin to one with Minnesota on the power play 11:57 into the second, as he rifled a one-timer from the high slot that Howard never saw.
Coyle tied the game 4:33 into the third when he pounded home a rebound amid a scrum in front, and Parise followed with the go-ahead goal just 1:45 later when he jammed home Jared Spurgeon's centering feed for a 3-2 lead at 6:18.
However, Tatar brought the Red Wings even nearly 5 1/2 minutes later, as he stopped on a dime in the right circle before rifling a wrister high into the far side corner to tie the tilt with 8:17 to play.
Early on, Nyquist buried a rebound from the left circle with Detroit on the power play 13:45 into the game and then converted a breakaway with a slick backhander under Bryzgalov's pads to make it 2-0 with 1:33 left in the frame.
