Red Wings outlast Lightning

Mar 31, 2014 - 3:37 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Jonas Gustavsson stopped 26 shots and the Detroit Red Wings picked up a big victory thanks to a 3-2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday.

Gustav Nyquist, David Legwand and Joakim Andersson all scored for the Red Wings, who have won their past two games to move two points ahead of Columbus for the top wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.

"I thought we had a real solid game hear today," said Nyquist. "Our penalty kill was solid and our power play worked a lot better. It was just a real good team game we had."

Valtteri Filppula and Sami Salo scored for the Lightning, who had won two straight coming in. Ben Bishop stopped 27 shots in the loss.

"They scored some fluky goals on us tonight," said Bishop. "I thought we played well enough to win, but sometimes those things happen, and their goalie played a really good game."

Tampa made it a 3-2 game with 4:29 to play as Salo blasted a slap shot from the right point between the legs of a Detroit defender for his fourth goal of the season.

The Lightning got Bishop out of the net with just over a minute to play and had a faceoff in the Detroit end late in the game, but the Red Wings were able to control the puck and clear the zone to end the game.

Tampa drew first blood at 8:40 of the first as a Detroit player tried to pass it back to a defender in his zone, but the puck bounced off the stick. Filppula picked up the puck and used a heavy wrister into the left corner for his 25th goal of the season.

Detroit, though, scored just over two minutes later as Darren Helm's shot from the high slot saw the rebound go to the right and Andersson backhand it in for his eighth of the year.

Just four minutes later, the Wings took the lead as Nyquist skated in on a break and was hooked, which led to him getting a weak shot on net and a delayed call. However, he picked up his own rebound at the right side and threw it in for his 27th goal of the season.

The only goal of the second period went to Detroit while on the power play, as Johan Franzen's wrister from the left circle was deflected into the net by Legwand at 16:36.
