Isles edge Devils in SO
Apr 12, 2014 - 5:42 AM Newark, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Josh Bailey beat Martin Brodeur with a nasty spin-o-rama in the second round of the shootout to send the New York Islanders to a 3-2 win over the New Jersey Devils on Friday at Prudential Center. After Frans Nielsen and Damien Brunner exchanged markers to open the shootout, Bailey charged down the right side and cut in front before spinning around and backhanding the disc past Brodeur to put the Islanders on top.
Jaromir Jagr then had the puck roll off his stick at the other end before Ryan Strome, who potted a power-play goal 19 seconds into the third to tie the game, skated down the left side and used the same move as Bailey to beat Brodeur and send the Devils to their 17th straight shootout lost, extending an NHL record.
"When you get into the shootout it's about skills competition and they do what they do," Islanders head coach Jack Capuano said of both Bailey and Strome using the spin-o-rama. "Obviously against a great goaltender (like Brodeur) it's tough to beat him any other way."
Anders Lee supplied New York's other goal, while Anders Nilsson stopped 25- of-27 shots for the Islanders, who took three of the five meetings with the Devils this season.
Ryan Carter and Patrik Elias each scored once for New Jersey, which fell to 0-13 in shootouts this season. Brodeur registered 28 saves in the setback.
"You should be walking out of the rink feeling a lot better about yourselves than you do," Devils head coach Peter DeBoer said of his club's struggles in the shootout. "I feel for our group because we shouldn't feel as badly as we do having only lost two games in regulation in our last dozen."
New Jersey carried a 2-1 lead into the third after Brodeur stopped all 13 shots he faced in the second, but a tripping minor against Tim Sestito with 28 seconds left in the middle frame came back to haunt the Devils in the third.
With the Isles still on the power play early in the third, Strome toe-dragged around a defender in the right circle before rifling a wrister that sailed over Brodeur's glove to bring the visitors even.
Neither team managed much from there, and despite registering all four shots in overtime, the Islanders were unable to break the deadlock, forcing the game into a shootout.
Early on, Lee and Carter scored 59 seconds apart midway through the first before Elias found the back of the net in the final minute of the frame to give the Devils a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes.
Elias' shot from the slot sailed past Nilsson's blocker with 8.3 seconds on the clock to put the Devils in front.
Game Notes
Jagr recorded his 1,048th career assist to move within one of Gordie Howe for eighth all-time ... The Islanders end their season at Buffalo on Sunday, while the Devils will conclude their season at home on Sunday versus Boston ... Nielsen notched two assists for the Islanders.
