Final
Andersen, Ducks edge Stars
Apr 19, 2014 - 5:49 AM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Frederik Andersen made 34 saves and the Anaheim Ducks grabbed a 3-2 victory over the Dallas Stars in Game 2 of this Western Conference quarterfinal series.A pair of one-goal wins by Anaheim in front of its home crowd has given the team a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series, which will switch to Dallas for the next two games starting Monday.
Ryan Getzlaf posted a goal and an assist, while Andrew Cogliano and Corey Perry also scored for the Ducks, who are the top seed in the Western Conference.
Getzlaf was hit in the face by a puck shot off the stick of Tyler Seguin in the closing seconds of the first game and suffered a deep facial laceration. He required multiple stitches to close the cut, but that x-rays were negative.
"Every once in a while, you need your best players to step it up when the rest of the guys lose their composure," said Anaheim head coach Bruce Boudreau. "Getzy, with what's happened to him in the last three days, to come in and get two points and a plus-3 rating, is a sure reason why he's hopefully nominated for the MVP."
Alex Chiasson and Ryan Garbutt each scored for the Stars and Kari Lehtonen give up three goals on 19 shots in the loss.
"Every game is important from here on out," said Garbutt. "If we take care of business at home, we are going to be fine."
Anaheim got a shorthanded goal at 5:09 of the third period as Getzlaf sent a pass from the left circle to the low right side where Cogliano lifted it over Lehtonen for a 3-1 lead.
Dallas got one back as Shawn Horcoff sent a pass from the left boards to the front, where it took a couple of bounces to the front and Garbutt gathered it in his feet before chipping it in halfway through the third.
Getzlaf was whistled for tripping with three minutes to play and Dallas later pulled Lehtonen for a 6-on-4, but was unable to get one through.
The team still had a minute to work with after the power play and still had Lehtonen on the bench, but Andersen earned his pay by stopping a stuff attempt from Cody Eakin down low, then stopping a Trevor Daley right-point blast that saw Daniel Winnik clear away the rebound as the team hung on for the win.
Dallas drew first blood in the game on the power play when Jamie Benn threaded a pass from the low right side to the circle where Chiasson one-timed it into the left side at 7:40 of the first.
Just under 10 minutes later, the Ducks tied the game as Getzlaf stole the puck at the right point, muscled his way down low and lifted the it in for his second of the series.
It was 2-1 in favor of Anaheim at 16:15 of the second when a turnover in the neutral zone was picked off by Perry and he flew down the right wing before blasting a big slap shot past Lehtonen.
Andersen stopped 10 shots in the second period.
