Bruins explode late to take down Oilers

Nov 7, 2014 - 4:37 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Carl Soderberg and Dougie Hamilton each scored on the power play during a four-goal third period that lifted the Boston Bruins to a 5-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers at TD Garden.

The Bruins trailed 2-1 with under nine minutes left before scoring three times within a span of 2:34 to move ahead, with Soderberg's tally with 7:31 remaining following Loui Eriksson's equalizer that began the barrage.

Hamilton added a pair of assists in addition to his late score in Boston's fourth straight victory and 13th consecutive triumph over the Oilers, who last defeated the Bruins in October 2000. Eriksson, Soderberg and Reilly Smith each finished with a goal and an assist.

"Those games aren't always perfect, but you like the way your team responds to different situations," Bruins head coach Claude Julien stated. "We're down 2-1 (and) instead of panicking, we just picked up our game and put our foot on the gas pedal and found a way to get some goals here."

Milan Lucic tacked on an empty-net goal to support a 24-save effort from Tuukka Rask.

Boyd Gordon and Mark Arcobello recorded the goals for Edmonton, losers of four straight and now 0-4-1 on the road this season. Ben Scrivens stopped 27-of-31 shots in defeat.

Arcobello knocked home a rebound of Nail Yakupov's initial attempt 1:44 into the third period to give the Oilers a 2-1 lead they held until failing to withstand's Boston's charge down the stretch.

Hamilton started the comeback by sending a puck toward the net that hit off a player's skate and came right to Eriksson, who fired it into an open left side with 8:56 remaining.

The Oilers' Keith Aulie was penalized for holding the stick less than a minute after Eriksson's goal and Boston took advantage, with Soderberg one-timing Patrice Bergeron's centering feed past Scrivens for a 3-2 edge with 7:31 left.

Hamilton got into the act a mere 69 seconds later on another 5-on-4 situation, connecting on a left-circle shot off an Eriksson give.

"You can't give a dangerous team like that power-play chances," said Scrivens. "We need to find a way to close teams out."

Lucic's wrister into the vacated Edmonton net with 7.5 seconds on the final clock put the finishing touches on the win.

Edmonton got the game's first goal by capitalizing on a four-minute high- sticking minor to David Krejci moments after Smith hit the post with a well- placed shot. Camped in front of the Boston net, Gordon was able to put the rebound of Justin Schultz's blast from the point across the line with 5:11 to go in the opening period.

Boston pulled even late in the first courtesy of Smith, who ripped a wrister on a transition rush over Scrivens' glove and into the top right corner 1:15 prior to the intermission.

The second period saw more wide-open play but no scoring as both netminders were sharp, with Rask coming up with 13 saves and Scrivens stopping 12 shots.

Game Notes

Edmonton fell to 0-9 with one tie over its last 10 visits to Boston, with the Oilers' last road win in the series coming on Nov. 7, 1996 ... The Oilers had gone 0-for-15 on the power play over their previous four games ... Krejci returned to the Bruins lineup after missing two games with a hip injury ... Lucic skated in his 500th career NHL game ... Edmonton defenseman Andrew Ference, who spent seven seasons in Boston from 2006-13, served the second of a three-game suspension for an illegal check against Vancouver on Saturday.
