Kane injured as Blackhawks top Panthers in SO
Feb 25, 2015 - 6:25 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Jonathan Toews and Patrick Sharp each scored during the shootout in Chicago's 3-2 victory over the Florida Panthers, but the Blackhawks lost star forward Patrick Kane during the game.Kane exited midway through the first period with an upper-body injury after being cross-checked by Florida defenseman Alex Petrovic. He got up under his own power after falling into the boards awkwardly, but skated straight to the dressing room.
"He might miss some time but we'll know the extent of it tomorrow," said Chicago head coach Joel Quenneville.
Kris Versteeg and Toews each lit the lamp during regulation for the Blackhawks, while rookie Scott Darling made 34 saves and stopped both Florida skaters in the shootout to earn the win.
Jussi Jokinen and Vincent Trocheck each scored late goals for the Panthers and Roberto Luongo turned aside 36 shots in the loss.
"We don't give up, we stay on it. It's a huge point for our team," Luongo said.
Florida has now lost six straight games to the Blackhawks and has not won in Chicago since Dec. 16, 2007.
Toews opened the skills competition by lifting a backhander over Luongo and Sharp followed with a well-placed wrister. Darling denied Trocheck with a pad stop and the outcome was sealed after Nick Bjugstad lost control of the puck.
Trocheck tied the game with 3:27 left in regulation. He spun around and fired the puck toward the front of the net from below the goal line. The puck caromed off Duncan Keith's skate and over the goal line before Darling shuffled it out of the net.
During overtime, Brandon Saad rang a shot off the crossbar early on and Florida's sustained offensive pressure failed to produce a goal as the game went to a shootout.
After Petrovic went to the penalty box for injuring Kane, Toews wristed in a loose puck from the right side of the net 9:25 into the game.
Sharp had his shot blocked in the slot, but Versteeg corralled the loose puck and beat Luongo with a short-side wrister for a 2-0 lead with 5:32 left in the second.
Jokinen cut the deficit in half with 7:37 remaining after depositing Brad Boyes' cross-ice feed into the back of the net.
