Flames beat Oilers on Raymond's hat trick

Oct 10, 2014 - 6:40 AM Edmonton, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Mason Raymond had another hat trick in a Calgary Flames game.

This time the Flames were happy to see it.

Raymond scored three goals in his second game with his new team and the Flames beat the Edmonton Oilers 5-2 on Thursday night.

"That's a lot of fun," Raymond said. "Most important is that we got those two points."

It was Raymond's third career hat trick, with the first two coming against the Flames when he played for the Vancouver Canucks. His second goal snapped a 2-2 tie 4:23 into the third period and he completed the feat with 5:18 remaining.

Jiri Hudler and T.J. Brodie also scored and Joe Colborne had three assists for the Flames, who opened the season on Wednesday with a 4-2 loss to Vancouver at home.

Karri Ramo made 38 saves in the win, turning aside most of what Edmonton sent his way during what Oilers coach Dallas Akin said was one of his team's best offensive games since he took over before last season.

"I can't remember us being that good offensively last year," Akin said. "Maybe a couple of times, but off the top of my head I can't remember them, and I would."

Teddy Purcell and Taylor Hall scored power-play goals for the Oilers, who had the worst record in the Western Conference last season. All five Calgary goals came against Ben Scrivens on just 26 shots.

Hall scored on a one-timer from the right side 11:25 into the second period after Ryan Nugent-Hopkins circled around to find him with a pass, tying the game at 2-2 for Edmonton. It was the only goal of the second period.

Lance Bouma hit Raymond with a tip pass behind a defender in the neutral zone, and the new Flame raced to beat Scrivens with a slap shot from the slot to give Calgary the lead.

He completed the hat trick at 14:42 after Colborne slipped him a pass from the low left side through the crease for the stuff and a 4-2 lead.

Brodie sealed the win on a power-play goal with 40 seconds remaining.

Raymond scored hat tricks against the Flames on Dec. 27, 2009, and less than a year later on Dec. 1, 2010, both times in Calgary. He is from Cochrane, just outside Calgary.

Game Notes

The Oilers will start a three-game road trip on Saturday in Vancouver ... The Flames will continue a six-game road trip in St. Louis on Saturday.
