Canucks rally to beat Oilers in SO
Oct 12, 2014 - 7:24 AM Vancouver, BC (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Higgins scored the lone shootout goal as the Vancouver Canucks rallied to beat the Edmonton Oilers 5-4 at Rogers Arena. The Canucks overcame three two-goal deficits and tied the game at 4-4 on Linden Vey's first NHL goal at 7:06 of the third period.
After an exciting overtime period, Higgins fired a wrister off the glove of Edmonton goalie Viktor Fasth to secure the extra point for Vancouver, which opened its season with a 4-2 victory at Calgary on Wednesday.
Ryan Miller stopped 25-of-29 shots and improved to 8-0 lifetime against the Oilers.
"The boys worked real hard and bailed me out," Miller said.
Fasth made 39 saves for the Oilers, who suffered a 5-2 home defeat to the Flames in Thursday's opener.
"We played good during most parts of the game," said Fasth. "We got a lot of penalties today. It's a tough team to beat when you're spending that much time in the box."
Brad Hunt potted his first NHL goal on a power play, beating Miller with a slap shot 5:41 into the contest. Mark Arcobello scored on a backhander at the right post to make it 2-0 at 10:31 of the first period.
The Canucks got on the board with 10 seconds remaining in the opening frame when Henrik Sedin deflected a shot by his twin brother Daniel, who picked up his 500th career assist and collected two more later on.
Nail Yakupov gave Edmonton a 3-1 lead 2:22 into the second, but Nick Bonino countered 2:04 later for Vancouver.
The Canucks then got a four-minute power play when Taylor Hall went off for high-sticking. Jesse Joensuu, however, scored a shorthanded goal to make it 4-2 at 8:36.
Still on the man advantage, Vancouver newcomer Radim Vrbata buried a feed from Daniel Sedin at 10:48.
