Canucks hang on to beat Oilers

Nov 20, 2014 - 6:15 AM Edmonton, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Yannick Weber scored the go-ahead goal with 8:28 remaining and the Vancouver Canucks escaped with a 5-4 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday.

Radim Vrbata scored twice, including once on the power play, and Jannik Hansen had a short-handed goal for the Canucks, who were coming off a four-day break after losing 5-0 to Phoenix last Friday.

"That's a game that the coaches probably didn't like, but we got 2 points," Vrbata said."

David Perron's would-be tying goal for Edmonton in the final seconds was waved off after a replay review showed he kicked the puck in with his skate.

The Oilers rallied back from deficits of 2-0 and 3-1 to tie the score on Andrew Ference's goal on a long slap shot 6:21 into the third period but suffered their fourth straight loss.

Ryan Miller allowed four goals on 32 shots for the win and Ben Scrivens let in all five of the Canucks goals on 31 shots.

"There's no more consolation prizes if we're close," said Scrivens. "We have to find a way to do it."

The Canucks improved to 4-0 over Edmonton this season, with the wins coming by a total of just five goals. They will play once more, on April 11, the final day of the regular season.

Chris Higgins scored for the Canucks while Steven Pinizzotto, Teddy Purcell and Boyd Gordon each had a goal for Edmonton.

Hansen scored 15:41 into the game on a short-handed break, beating Scrivens with a snap shot to the glove side.

Moments later, a would-be Canucks goal was waived off because Alexandre Burrows backed into the Edmonton goaltender in the crease.

Vrbata gave the Canucks a 2-0 lead with a slap shot from the right circle that came just three seconds into a power play early in the second period and right after Henrik Sedin won a faceoff.

The Oilers scored 2:41 later, at 4:43, when Pinizzotto picked up his first career tally by beating Miller's glove on the short side with a snap shot while skating against defenseman Kevin Bieksa on a rush.

Overall, there were six goals scored in the period, which ended with Vancouver holding a 4-3 lead.

Game Notes

The Oilers are off to an 0-2-1 start to a five-game homestand that continues Friday against New Jersey ... The Canucks are right back to Vancouver for a three-game homestand that starts Thursday against Anaheim.
