Stalock, Sharks blank Habs

Mar 3, 2015 - 6:00 AM San Jose, CA ( - Alex Stalock posted 20 saves for his second shutout of the season as the San Jose Sharks took a 4-0 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Monday.

Newly-acquired Ben Smith had a goal and an assist for the Sharks, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Joe Pavelski, Patrick Marleau and Matt Irwin all scored in the win.

"This was a really good game and that's the way it has to be," said Pavelski. "We took care of business tonight and it was good to see the guys all playing together tonight."

San Jose got Smith and a conditional seventh-round selection in 2017 from the Blackhawks in exchange for forward Andrew Desjardins on Monday, and also sent forward Tyler Kennedy to the New York Islanders for a conditional pick in the 2015 or 2016 draft.

Carey Price allowed all four goals on 37 shots for the Canadiens, who had a four-game winning streak snapped.

Montreal acquired Torrey Mitchell and Brian Flynn in separate trades with the Buffalo Sabres on Monday for prospect Jack Nevins, a seventh-round draft pick in 2016 and a fifth-round pick in next year's draft. Also, the team acquired defenseman Jeff Petry from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for a pair of picks in the 2015 draft.

Montreal has lost eight straight games in San Jose, last tasting victory there on Nov. 23, 1999.

The Sharks got a goal from Smith just 6:51 into the game as he tipped a Marc- Edouard Vlasic shot from the left point past Price to give his new team a 1-0 lead.

Skating on the power play late in the first, San Jose made it a 2-0 game. Brent Burns fired a shot on net from the left point that hit off of Pavelski then tagged the left post. The puck then hit off the back of Price's skate and slid in with 46.1 seconds left in the frame.

San Jose took a 3-0 lead at 6:28 of the second period as Irwin blasted a shot from the left point that made its way through a maze of players for his seventh of the season.

The Sharks took a 4-0 lead with 6:53 to play as Pavelski threw a pass from the left circle to the front of the net where Marleau shoved it in for his 15th of the year.
