Jooris' hat trick lifts Flames by Coyotes

Dec 3, 2014 - 6:56 AM Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Josh Jooris picked up his first career hat trick in Calgary's 5-2 win over Arizona Tuesday.

His second goal at the 7:13 mark of the second period proved to be the game- winner, and his empty-net goal in the final minute sealed the win.

Karri Ramo made 27 saves on 29 shots for the Flames, who won their third straight game.

Calgary's Dennis Wideman, Johnny Gaudreau, Curtis Glencross and Jiri Hudler all had two assists.

"Young guys have stepped in and contributed," Wideman said. "It makes us a little more dangerous."

Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Sam Gagner potted Arizona's goals in its second loss in three games, both to Calgary.

"We seem to be caught in this rut where we're winning one and losing one," said Gagner. "We have to find a way to string some wins together."

Mike Smith allowed four goals on 23 shots.

In a 2-2 tie, Smith got a piece of Jooris' point-blank shot, but the puck still squeaked through. Jooris beat defenseman Zbynek Michalek to the net and took a pass from Gaudreau below the goal line.

Sean Monahan gave the Flames a two-goal lead in the third period. He found a soft spot in the defense on the rush, and after receiving a short pass from Wideman, created a shooting lane and wristed the puck by Smith.

The Flames jumped out to a quick start with a goal hardly a minute into the game. Arizona did not get control of the puck in its own zone, and David Jones stepped into a shot with a loose puck in the slot and fired it by Smith for the 1-0 lead.

Ekman-Larsson tied the game later in the period with a wrister from the blue line that got by Ramo. Jooris broke the 1-1 tie near the end of the first. He crashed the net, and it paid off when Kris Russell's backhand pass found its way through the crease past Smith's stick where Jooris could direct it into the net.

The Coyotes did not take long to tie the game again in the second period. Just 2:02 into the period, Martin Hanzal fired a shot on Ramo. A big rebound landed right on the stick of Gagner at the side of the net, and he made no mistake burying the shot to make it a 2-2 game.
