Panthers top Flames in high-scoring affair

Jan 10, 2015 - 6:01 AM Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Tomas Fleischmann scored with 3:09 remaining in the third period to lift the Florida Panthers to a 6-5 win over the Calgary Flames on Friday night.

Fleischmann backhanded in a rebound from the slot 45 seconds after the Flames had tied it on Matt Stajan's second goal of the game.

Brad Boyes, who had a goal and an assist for Florida, was called for slashing with 2:25 left.

The Flames pulled Jonas Hiller during the subsequent power play for a 6-on-4 advantage and Brian Campbell, who gave the Panthers a 5-4 lead at 9:29 of the third, bailed out goaltender Al Montoya. The puck sat in the crease, but the veteran defenseman alertly pinned it against Montoya to trigger a whistle.

Jonathan Huberdeau, Jimmy Hayes and Sean Bergenheim also scored as Florida improved to 3-1-0 on its six-game road trip.

The Panthers lost 6-4 at home to the Flames back in November.

"It's been wild games, both of them. Exciting games, but coaches don't like them," said Florida coach Gerard Gallant.

TJ Brodie also had two goals for Calgary, which concluded a six-game homestand with a third straight loss.

"Pond hockey is what I really want to call it. It seemed that the last shot would win the game," said Calgary coach Bob Hartley.

Stajan opened the scoring 2:42 into the game off a turnover by Florida rookie defenseman Aaron Ekblad, but a giveaway by Hiller behind his net resulted in Boyes dishing out front to Huberdeau for the tying goal less than two minutes later.

Boyes directed in Huberdeau's feed from the left boards to put the Panthers up 2-1 at 13:12 of the first period.

Calgary tied it on a power-play goal by Brodie with 3:24 left in the first, then grabbed a 3-2 lead when Mikael Backlund cleaned up a rebound at 2:27 of the second period.

Just 19 seconds later, Bergenheim tapped in his own rebound to draw Florida even.

Brodie restored the lead for Calgary when his point shot squeezed through Montoya at 8:13 of the second.

Hayes scored on a long wrist shot to tie it up again with 2:55 remaining in the middle stanza.
