Avalanche take down Coyotes

Mar 20, 2015 - 5:54 AM Glendale, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Semyon Varlamov stopped 27 shots and five different Colorado players lit the lamp in a 5-2 decision over Arizona on Thursday.

Ryan O'Reilly, Jarome Iginla, Freddie Hamilton, Matt Duchene and Gabriel Landeskog scored once each for the Avalanche, who opened a five-game road trip with their third straight win and sixth in seven overall.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson netted both goals for the Coyotes, who dropped their sixth consecutive game. Louis Domingue allowed four goals on 28 shots in the loss.

"I thought we did some good things in the offensive zone. I thought our defending and puck errors were an issue tonight," said Arizona head coach Dave Tippett.

Despite having a goal waved off earlier in the period by review, the Coyotes pulled within 3-2 as the clock ticked down to eight minutes left in regulation.

Ekman-Larsson batted a puck out of the air from behind Varlamov, which caromed off Colorado's Brad Stuart and over the goal line before being swept out of harm's way. Another review ensued, upholding the on-ice call.

Duchene restored the visitors' two-goal edge roughly three minutes later by flipping home a Dennis Everberg pass.

Landeskog then outraced a host defender to an O'Reilly dump in and tapped the puck into an empty net with 13 seconds left.

Ekman-Larsson opened the scoring for the hosts at 3:24 on a high wrister, but Colorado struck back with goals from O'Reilly at 8:15 on a superb individual effort and Iginla 29 seconds later off a 2-on-1 rush with Duchene.

The Avs went up 3-1 on Hamilton's first career tally, deflecting a Stuart offering at 8:09 of the second.

"It's nice to get another big win here, but I did something special today. I've been waiting a long time," Hamilton stated. "It feels like a big monkey's been on my shoulder."

Game Notes

The Avalanche have won four in a row on the road against the Coyotes, with Thursday's result the only one in the run which was not decided beyond regulation ... Ekman-Larsson snapped a 13-game goal drought dating back to Feb. 16 against Colorado, and his 19 goals leads all NHL defensemen ... Arizona has lost 16 of its last 17 games ... Coyotes forward Martin Erat suffered an upper-body injury in the second period and did not return.
