Sharks use strong 3rd to down Avs

Apr 2, 2015 - 5:31 AM San Jose, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Alex Stalock made 19 saves in a solid effort in between the pipes and the San Jose Sharks scored four times during the third period en route to a 5-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday.

Logan Couture had a goal and an assist, while Patrick Marleau, John Scott, Scott Hannan and Chris Tierney also scored for the Sharks, who are 3-0-1 over their last four games and sit five points behind idle Winnipeg for the final wild card spot in the Western Conference.

"He made some really solid saves," San Jose head coach Todd McLellan said of Stalock. "The group around him played well."

Matt Duchene lit the lamp and Reto Berra allowed three goals on 27 shots for the Avalanche, whose playoff hopes are barely alive after two straight losses. They are eight points out of the final playoff spot with five games to play.

After nearly 37 minutes of scoreless hockey, Hannan gave the Sharks the lead with his second goal of the season after he tipped Brent Burns' slap pass past Berra's blocker.

Tierney added to San Jose's lead 8:01 into the third period after Matt Nieto whacked at a rebound in close and Tierney was there to backhand the loose puck past Berra.

Duchene got the Avalanche on the board 53 seconds later after taking Zach Redmond's cross-ice pass and firing a shot off Stalock's shoulder and into the net.

Marleau buried Couture's pass from behind the net to restore the Sharks' two- goal lead with 9:48 left in regulation.

Couture and Scott each added empty-net tallies with under five minutes to play to seal the win.
