Schenn beats the clock as Flyers down Islanders

Apr 8, 2015 - 6:05 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Brayden Schenn's goal with 2.1 seconds left in regulation sent Philadelphia to an unexpected 5-4 victory over the New York Islanders on Tuesday.

The hosts wasted a 4-1 lead early in the third period, with Anders Lee netting his second goal of the contest with 28 seconds to play.

However, on the game's final shift, Schenn was squared up against Isles defenseman Travis Hamonic along the left-wing boards and released a shot which handcuffed an unscreened Jaroslav Halak to the delight of the home crowd.

"I knew there was not a whole lot of time left, and I just tried to get it on net," said Schenn. "I'll definitely take a lucky one like that."

Claude Giroux scored twice and Mark Streit added three assists for the Flyers, who have won two in a row and three of their last four.

Pierre-Edouard Bellemare and Carlo Colaiacovo also lit the lamp to back a 36- save effort from Steve Mason.

John Tavares posted a goal and two assists for the Islanders, who skidded to their fifth loss in seven. Johnny Boychuk added a late tally for the visitors, while Halak stopped 22 pucks.

"We gotta pick up our teammates and stay together and focus on the next one," Tavares said.

It was a 4-1 game for the Flyers when Zac Rinaldo fooled three Islanders with a backhand cross-ice pass from the right circle which Colaiacovo one-timed past Halak at 2:45 elapsed in the third.

Lee pulled the visitors within two on a quick shot in the slot at 8:21 and Boychuk made it 4-3 with 1:44 to play and Halak on the bench for an extra skater.

Tavares and Lee then shocked both teams and the partisan throng when the former won a right-circle faceoff win and the latter was alone in front to slide the puck past Mason.

Things looked brighter early on for the orange and black. They killed off 59 seconds of a two-man disadvantage early in the first, then failed on their own two-man chance, but converted on the ensuing 5-on-4 when Giroux fired home from the left circle at 12:54.

Giroux added an even-strength marker with 2:16 left in the first, a rip from between the circles resulting from another dish by Streit.

Tavares redirected a Ryan Strome slap pass past Mason just before the midway point of the game, putting New York on the board on its 26th shot of the contest.

Philly went up by two once more as Vinny Lecavalier's cross-ice pass was slammed home by Bellemare just 72 seconds later.

Game Notes

Giroux recorded his 15th career two-goal game, but has yet to record a hat trick in the regular season ... The Flyers avoided a season-series sweep against the Islanders for the first time since the latter franchise began play in 1972 ... New York scratched forwards Matt Martin and Cal Clutterbuck.
